LIGHT RAIL: Here's everything Sound Transit showed at West Seattle event, as another round of drilling continues ... - West Seattle Blog

Thanks to the reader who texted the photo of Sound Transit‘s drill rig by Taco Time at 35th/Fauntleroy. It’s another round of the sampling they’ve been doing around the area as part of environmental studies for West Seattle light rail. ST spokesperson Rachelle Cunningham tells us it should be done at that spot by today’s end. Meantime, we promised to let you know when all the graphics show on easels and tables at last week’s open-house-style station-planning meeting were available – we requested them the next day but it’s taken ST until now to get them into a sharable format. Here they are, in PDF (41 pages).

P.S. The related survey remains open through December.

Solving Molecular Mysteries: How Quantum Light “Hears” Quantum Sound - SciTechDaily

Quantum Physics Headphones Sound

Researchers from the University of East Anglia have introduced a pioneering method using quantum light to detect quantum sound. Their study sheds light on the intricate quantum interactions between molecular vibrations and photons. The findings are expected to enhance understanding of light-matter interactions on a molecular scale and could lead to new avenues in quantum technology and biology. The team’s efforts might also spur the development of innovative techniques to detect individual phonons directly.

Scientists from the University of East Anglia have proposed a new way of using quantum light to ‘see’ quantum sound.

A recent study recently published in the journal Physical Review Letters reveals the quantum-mechanical interplay between vibrations and particles of light, known as photons, in molecules. It is hoped that the discovery may help scientists better understand the interactions between light and matter on molecular scales.

And it potentially paves the way for addressing fundamental questions about the importance of quantum effects in applications ranging from new quantum technologies to biological systems.

The Controversy in Chemical Physics

Dr Magnus Borgh from UEA’s School of Physics said: “There is a long-standing controversy in chemical physics about the nature of processes where energy from particles of light is transferred within molecules.

“Are they fundamentally quantum-mechanical or classical? Molecules are complex and messy systems, constantly vibrating. How do these vibrations affect any quantum-mechanical processes in the molecule?

“These processes are typically investigated using techniques that rely on polarisation – the same property of light used in sunglasses to reduce reflections. But this is a classical phenomenon.

“Techniques from quantum optics, the field of physics that studies the quantum nature of light and its interactions with matter on the atomic scale, can offer a way to investigate genuine quantum effects directly in molecular systems.”

Significance of Photon Correlations in Quantum Behavior

Quantum behavior can be revealed by studying correlations in the emitted light from a molecule placed in a laser field. Correlations answer the question of how likely it is that two photons are emitted very close together and can be measured using standard techniques.

Ben Humphries, a Ph.D. student in theoretical chemistry, at UEA, said: “Our research shows that when a molecule exchanges phonons – quantum-mechanical particles of sound – with its environment, this produces a recognizable signal in the photon correlations.”

While photons are routinely created and measured in laboratories all over the world, individual quanta of vibrations, which are the corresponding particles of sound, phonons, cannot in general be similarly measured.

Potential Applications and Future Prospects

The new findings provide a toolbox for investigating the world of quantum sound in molecules.

Lead researcher Dr Garth Jones, from UEA’s School of Chemistry, said: “We have also computed correlations between photons and phonons.”

“It would be very exciting if our paper could inspire the development of new experimental techniques to detect individual phonons directly,” he added.

Travelers sound off on United's new boarding policy - Fox Business

United Airlines is debuting new plans to let economy passengers with window seats board first.

The airline’s new boarding process, called WILMA (windows, middle, aisle), is rolling out just ahead of the holiday travel months, with an aim to speed up boarding efficiencies. United is projecting that it will shed off two minutes of boarding, which will help the planes take off on time. Overall, the airline will be able to add a new flight to the schedule each day.

However, some passengers are airing their grievances about the new plans.

"It’s an inconvenience for people that might be paying more and still have to wait longer to board to seat window passengers first," Sherry Brazil, a traveler passing through Newark Liberty International Airport, told FOX Business.

For some, the move is strengthening allegiance to the window seat.

"As a window person, I don’t really think it’s that big of a deal," Tik Toker Leona Marlene said, whose account features travel tips and advice. "But I could see aisle people being a little bit bothered by this."

Passengers at Newark Airport said that access to overhead space is a reason why customers pay higher prices for certain seats, which has a higher guarantee rate when boarding in the first few groups.

United told FOX Business that it is in the process of retrofitting its aircraft with larger overhead bins that will have enough space for each customer to have a carry-on suitcase onboard. The larger bins are also available on all of United’s new aircraft. The updated storage capacity will "largely eliminate the need for customers in later boarding groups to gate check their luggage."

The larger bins are also available on all of United’s new aircraft. The updated storage capacity will "largely eliminate the need for customers in later boarding groups to gate check their luggage."

Yet, the new updates will not be completed until 2026, according to United Airlines. Meantime, customers who do not secure overhead space will have to check their carry-on to the final destination.

Another passenger said that the amount of time it takes to get on a plane depends on how quickly the passengers move themselves.

"If people take the time with the bags and things like that, then the purpose is defeated," a flier at Newark Airport said.

Others are on board with the new plans.

"This is a genius idea," Tik Toker Gina M. said. "I travel two times a month, and I hate having to wait for people in the aisle to get up."

Another Tik Toker, who claims to be an "aisle person," says that he loves the idea.

"Why sit in a cramped plane when I can board right before we leave?" Neko Swift said.

It’s not the first time United has used the WILMA process. The airline started testing out the new process at five airports in 2017 after introducing its Basic Economy, carry-on restricted ticket.

Other airlines have tested out variations of the system before but have reverted to giving priority boarding to first class and business class passengers.

United will still allow early boarding for those with disabilities, unaccompanied minors and active-military members and priority boarding for passengers with first or business class seats, in addition to status flyers or those with credit card advantages.

"Anything that makes the process go faster is fine with me," passenger Robert told FOX Business. "I’m willing to give it a try."

Ten-Into-One Headers Sound Like Nothing You Have Ever Heard - Road & Track

The Driftworks-built, E46-generation BMW M3 has been astonishing us with its V-10 swap for a long time. It already sounded spectacular with an E60 M5's S85 engine, but the ongoing build has only gotten more ridiculous with its latest modification. The car now has custom fabricated ten-into-one headers, winding over the top like a 1960s Can-Am racer before leading to a "five-exit" exhaust that utilizes both the car's stock four-exit system and a single-exit bypass.

The look is absurd, with the intricately-woven set of five headers on either bank of cylinders winding down into one pipe that goes underneath the front of the engine. What is even more ridiculous is the sound, which takes the M3 from sounding like a mid-00s Formula 1 car to something even higher-pitched even at lighter revving well below the tachometer's listed 10,000 RPM. At full song, the car should be as loud as it is delightful.

While the unique sound is the most satisfying part of the build, this types of exhaust manifold is designed to increase power through a very specific flow of exhaust gases. While that may make this car faster in the end, the biggest appeal here is that it takes an already-unique build to another stratosphere of intricate design. You want an S85 V-10 because it delivers power in such a unique way and with such a unique sound, so a change like this only adds to what makes a final product special.

Disney-owned YouTube TV channels just picked up 5.1 surround sound - Android Police

Summary

  • YouTube TV now offers free 5.1 surround sound for some Disney-owned networks, including ESPN, enhancing the audio experience for sporting events and other content.
  • The addition of 5.1 surround sound is part of YouTube TV's efforts to evolve and compete in the live streaming market, with small improvements to UI and promotional offers like the NFL Sunday Ticket package.
  • To enjoy the 5.1 surround sound feature, users need a compatible streaming device and can simply click on the surround sound icon within the player control bar when supported content is available.

If you’re a YouTube TV subscriber, you’re likely aware of some of the caveats of the service. For example, the provider is able to stream content in 4K, but you need to pay more each month for the option to view it in this format. Now, it seems that one benefit is being added to the service that will come for free — 5.1 surround sound.

An engineer with YouTube TV confirmed to 9to5Google that 5.1 surround sound is now available for some Disney-owned networks on most Chromecast, Apple TV, Roku, and Fire TV devices. If you have a smart TV that is model year 2021 or newer, it can also likely tap into this feature, in addition to Xbox and PlayStation 5 consoles.

Perhaps the most noteworthy channel in this group is ESPN, which regularly airs sporting events that could benefit from the boost in sound. However, it appears that other networks like ABC are also getting the feature. To leverage the option, all you have to do is click on a surround sound icon within the player control bar. YouTube TV notes that this icon will only appear when supported content can be viewed with 5.1 surround sound.

youtube-tv-live-guide-new-1

In an era when live streaming is ripe with competition, Google — which spearheads YouTube TV — knows that it needs to continue evolving the service to maintain its customer base. In August 2023, for instance, it made a small but significant tweak to the live guide display on YouTube TV. Similar to the overhauled Google TV design, the display now shows channels in tile formats for a cleaner, more organized appearance. It’s these small changes that not only improve the UI, but help YouTube TV keep pace with other platforms.

In the same month, a YouTube TV promotion also launched for new members to join for a free 3-week trial and a monthly discount of $8. The timing of the offer may not have not coincidentally fallen in line with the beginning of the NFL regular season. YouTube TV notably now has the rights to offer the NFL Sunday Ticket package, which — although priced separately — allows football fans to watch every live game.

Whether you’re looking for a streaming provider or you’re just an audio junkie, the 5.1 surround sound development may be of interest to you. That being said, it’s important to note that you’ll still need a compatible streaming device to ensure that you’re capable of leveraging the new feature. If sound is a deciding factor as you shop around, though, YouTube TV may be an option you’ll now want to consider.

I replaced my expensive Klipsch soundbar with a $300 Hisense, and it surprised me in the best way - ZDNet

The Hisense AX5125H 5.1.2Ch Sound Bar.

The Hisense soundbar is very easy to set up. In minutes, you'll be enjoying a much-improved sound experience from your TV.

Jack Wallen/ZDNET

I'm going to preface this by saying that for nearly a decade, my wife and I have been spoiled by a brilliant Klipsch soundbar that set the standard pretty high. Although our Klipsch is fairly basic (just a bar and a subwoofer with no EQ or other frills), the sound it produces is amazing.

Because of that, the bar for reviewing similar devices is high enough that few can reach it. That means I have to temper my opinions on other soundbars… especially regarding midrange, which so many soundbars don't seem to handle well (more on that in a bit).

Also: The best sound systems for any home

Suffice it to say, it's a rare occasion that I review a soundbar that exceeds what I've grown accustomed to in that (no longer produced) Klipsch speaker system. So, when I received the Hisense AX5125H 5.1.2Ch soundbar, I knew not to expect the same quality that has been filling our TV room for years.

The Hisense AX5125H 5.1.2Ch Sound Bar.

ZDNET Recommends

The Hisense AX5125H 5.1.2Ch soundbar

This cost-effective soundbar will bring movies and TV to life and punch up dialog so you never miss a word.

View at Amazon

Even assuming that expectation wouldn't be met, I was pleasantly surprised at the sound the Hisense soundbar produced. Before I get into my experience, let's talk specs.

The specs

The specs for the Hisense soundbar are fairly standard.

  • 5.1.2 Surround with 500W max audio power.
  • Nine speakers within the soundbar: Left and right front channel, center channel, left and right rear surround channel.
  • Wireless 6.5-inch subwoofer with 180W max audio power.
  • Wireless surround speakers.
  • Seven preset EQ modes (to deliver specific sounds for things like Movies, Music, Voice, and more).
  • Dolby Atmos.
  • Roku TV Ready through the HDMI (eARC) connection.
  • Wireless music streaming via Bluetooth.
  • Connectivity via HDMI, Bluetooth, or Optical.
  • One HDMI in and one HDMI out.
  • Price: Currently $320 on Amazon

My experience

First off, the setup of the soundbar is incredibly simple. Place the speakers where you want them, plug everything in, and the wireless connectivity will take care of the rest. In minutes, you'll have your soundbar up and running and ready to fill your TV room with glorious sound.

Also: Roku's soundbar sounded better than expected, and it fixed a big problem I have

But there's a problem, one that haunts so many soundbars. However, that problem can also be a blessing. Let me explain.

The very first thing I noticed with the Hisense soundbar was that the midrange sounded overly tinny. For many, this isn't a problem. For me… it is. I like the midrange to be a bit less subtle and warmer. Any time I hear midrange that's overly harsh (or tinny), I immediately assume the device producing the sound is cheap. And no matter what EQ setting I tried with the Hisense, the midrange never improved.

However (and this is a big however), have you noticed that, more often than not, voices are becoming harder and harder to hear (especially in movies)? The good thing about a midrange that's front and center is that those voices all of a sudden become prominent. Thanks to that, you won't miss out on dialog because of a too-loud score or sound effects.

And with the Hisense, the surround speakers bolster those voices even more, although that's not really how surround speakers are supposed to work (they're supposed to add ambient sound to whatever it is that you're watching to give you an immersive feeling). The way surround should work is voices are supposed to be focused in front of you in the center (unless a character is speaking from off-screen). But because the Hisense has a tendency to send voices to the surround speakers, it bolsters the dialog in such a way that you'll never miss a word.

Also: The best smart speakers you can buy

That, my friends, is a happy accident many users will greatly appreciate.

As far as bass is concerned, it's punchy but not overly so. The subwoofer adds to the overall effect of the sound, but it would have been great if the low pass filter could be changed to add just a bit of higher-end bass (to compensate for the tinny midrange and give the voices a bit more resonance). Even with that limitation, the bass is passable for both movies and television. Remember, however, the bass adjustments are very limited, so don't expect to add thunderous booms. The good news is the limited sound adjustments make it very user-friendly. You won't find anything overly complicated with this soundbar.

Another bonus is that when movies or TV sound is spot on, the Hisense AX5125H 5.1.2Ch soundbar really shines. On the other hand, if you're watching older films or TV series, the sound will suffer under the weight of too much midrange, making those laugh tracks of yore even harder to tolerate.

Also: The best amplifiers you can buy

Finally, the supplied remote is very easy to use and allows you to increase the bass and treble (though not by much), the volume, change the EQ, enable surround, connect via Bluetooth, and mute the sound.

The Hisense remote.

The Hisense remote is perfectly simple.

Jack Wallen/ZDNET

ZDNET's buying advice

This is simple: If you're not an audiophile and you have trouble hearing dialog in your TV and movies, the Hisense AX5125H 5.1.2Ch soundbar will be a great addition to your experience. And at its current price of $320, it's a worthwhile investment… as long as you don't expect high-end sound.

For anyone with budget constraints who still wants to upgrade the sound of the TV-watching experience, the Hisense AX5125H 5.1.2Ch soundbar is a solid choice that will serve you well (especially when dialog is buried under decibels of music and sound effects).

Kangana Ranaut hits back at Subramanian Swamy:'You sound like a pervert,' says women are more than just that - Times of India

A heated dispute unfolded on Twitter between multiple National Award-winning actress Kangana Ranaut and former BJP MP Subramanian Swamy. Kangana had been invited as the chief guest at the annual Ramleela event during the Lav Kush Ramleela festivities, which took place at the Red Fort in New Delhi. The controversy began when Subramanian Swamy questioned the decision to have Kangana as this year's chief guest. Swamy's comments were provoked by a social media post featuring Kangana in a bikini from one of her films. In response, Kangana described Swamy as a "pervert" and accused him of harboring deep-rooted sexism and a dormant lust for the female body. Kangana defended her position further in a more extensive post, suggesting that Swamy was insinuating that she had nothing more to offer, although the specific content of her response is missing in the provided text. Notably, Kangana's participation in the Lav Kush Ramleela event marked a historic moment, as she became the first woman to perform the Ravan Dahan ritual, igniting the effigy of Ravan, symbolizing the demon king being set ablaze by an arrow.
