'Sound of Freedom' studio looks to build on crowdfunding success with new film 'The Shift' - CNBC

Neal McDonough stars as a mysterious man known as "the benefactor" in Angel Studio's "The Shift."
Angel Studios

"Sound of Freedom" broke the Hollywood mold this summer. Now, the studio behind the surprising smash is looking to follow-up that success with a science fiction thriller based on the Bible's Book of Job.

Angel Studios is set to release "The Shift" this Friday. The film was crowdfunded by 6,000 investors through the company's "Angel Guild," which contributes money to film and television projects its members want to see made or widely distributed.

"It's a blessing. It really is," said Brock Heasley, who wrote and directed "The Shift." "To know that there were 6,000 people out there praying for us, 6,000 people out there who would put, in some cases, what little money they had into this film, because they believed in it that much."

It took five years and four crowdfunding campaigns to raise $3 million to produce the film. Additional funding was collected from private investors, bringing "The Shift's" budget to $6.4 million, a small sum by Hollywood standards.

A relative newcomer to Hollywood, Angel Studios uses a Kickstarter-style method of generating funds. It also allows its investors to select which projects they want to fund and gives them the opportunity to purchase shares in the company and its titles. It rose to prominence in 2019, when, under the name VidAngel, it crowdfunded and released hit biblical series "The Chosen."

"Where else in the world can you have 6,000 people put money into a film that amplifies light?" said Neal McDonough, the prolific character actor ("Captain America: The First Avenger," "Justified," "Yellowstone") who plays the main antagonist in "The Shift." "Only through Angel Studios. It is just remarkable that that is allowed to happen."

This community-funding approach has enabled Angel to ensure it is making projects that audiences want to see, guaranteeing viewership on its in-house streaming platform and ticket sales for cinematic releases.

The July release of "Sound of Freedom" raised the studio's profile even further. The Jim Caviezel-led thriller shook up norms in an industry still trying to find its footing after Covid lockdowns. It snared more than $180 million at the domestic box office during its run, outpacing big studio films such as Warner Bros.' "The Flash," on a budget of just $14.5 million. It made nearly $250 million worldwide.

"Movie theaters are always looking for ways to draw additional moviegoers to their big screens and having Angel Studios in the mix is good for the bottom line," said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore. "Innovation and outside the box thinking has put Angel Studios on the map. And with 'Sound of Freedom' the company found massive mainstream success while shaking up the status quo, competing head-to-head with the major studios in the hardscrabble summer movie marketplace and came out a winner."

"Sound of Freedom" isn't the only Angel Studios title to exponentially overperform its budget. "His Only Son," a biblical drama released in early 2023, cost $250,000 to make and generated $12.4 million at the box office. A crowdfunding campaign in partnership with Angel Studios raised more than $1.2 million for prints and advertising costs. The small budget, big returns formula is reminiscent of what Blumhouse is doing for the horror genre.

The Devil's in the details

Kristoffer Polaha and Neal McDonough star in Angel Studios' "The Shift."
Angel Studios

"The Shift," which is loosely based on the "Book of Job," centers on Kevin (Kristoffer Polaha), a man who recently lost his job and is having marital troubles after the disappearance of his young son. He crosses paths with a mysterious man known only as "the benefactor" (McDonough), who tempts Kevin with wealth and power.

The benefactor, aka the Devil himself, has the ability to "shift" people from one reality to another and promises to reunite Kevin with another version of his wife, if he agrees to work for him. Kevin grapples with whether or not to accept this enticing, yet immoral offer.

"Years ago, faith-based films were all just kind of just one-dimensional," McDonough said. "[Brock has] created a film that has sci-fi, action, a love story, and talks about how you can be a better human being for God. And whether you're religious or not, it's how you can just be a better human being, period. And there aren't enough films out there in the landscape these days to actually talk about those things."

"The Shift" is currently seeing "healthy" ticket sales comparable to Angel Studios' October release "After Death," which generated $5 million during its opening weekend on its way to a $23.4 million domestic run.

"I do think that there is an audience out there who is looking for something different," Heasley said. "It's something that expresses their faith and their values, but that is doing it in a different way. And I think there's room for it."

Step into the light

Jim Caviezel stars in Angel Studio's "Sound of Freedom."
Angel Studios

Although Angel Studios does not bill itself as a faith-based studio — it says that its content is meant to "amplify light" — much of its content has centered on biblical storytelling. "The Chosen," a Christian historical drama television series available on Angel's in-house streaming service as well as on Netflix and NBCUniversal's Peacock, has become popular and profitable for Angel and has even made the leap to the big screen through Fathom Events.

"The Chosen" has had nearly one billion views and generated more than $100 million, according to the company. Season four is set for release in February.

Soon after, "Cabrini," a film about the Roman Catholic missionary and future Saint Francesca Cabrini, will hit theaters in March. Then there's "Bonhoeffer," which tells the true story of German theologian and pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who stood up to the Nazis during the Third Reich, later in 2024.

Angel has utilized its audience to reach more moviegoers. The studio has a model it calls "pay it forward," which allows people buy tickets that can be claimed online for future screenings by those who may not be able to afford them. "Sound of Freedom" saw a significant number of tickets bought through this method. The tickets don't count towards the film's box office total until they are claimed.

"Angel Studios has pinpointed a greatly underserved market predominately in faith-based communities, curating and marketing content with them specifically in mind," said Shawn Robbins, chief analyst at BoxOffice.com. "It's always been a bit of a blind spot for the industry, but Angel has honed in on it."

Disclosure: NBCUniversal is the parent company of Peacock and CNBC.

Spotify Wrapped 2023: Burlington, Cambridge and Berkeley are popular ‘sound towns’ - NBC News

Spotify created a new “Wrapped” feature that matches listeners to cities based on their music tastes — and many users online are wondering what their “sound towns” say about them.

The feature — which is woven into the platform's personalized end-of-year user streaming data — shows Spotify users what cities have listening habits similar to theirs.

A Spotify spokesperson said sound towns are “objective and entirely driven by a user’s listening history.” There are over 1,300 sound town cities.

But many X users highlighted three in particular that they found were common sound towns: Burlington, Vermont; Berkeley, California; and Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Those who matched with the cities, which some online pointed out are all college towns, said artists represented in Burlington, Berkeley and Cambridge indicated an LGBTQ listenership. They cited artists like boygenius, Charli XCX and Janelle Monáe.

“spotify is trying to make a gay commune in berkeley, a lesbian commune in burlington, and a bisexual commune in cambridge,” an X user posted.

“Back in my day, you had to ask Google ‘am I gay?’ Now Spotify wrapped just tells you by placing you in Burlington, Berkeley, or Cambridge,” another posted

Officials in some of those cities expressed enthusiasm over the viral attention.

John Flanagan, the communications director of Burlington City Arts, said the city embraces “inclusivity, not to mention exquisite taste.”

“We’re delighted but not surprised that fans of artists who identify as queer align with Burlingtonians’ collective values,” Flanagan said in an email. “Our community prides itself on inclusivity and is dedicated to cultivating and sustaining our vibrant and welcoming arts scene. We value listening to and experiencing great art and music just as much as we value creating it.”

Cambridge Mayor Sumbul Siddiqui said the new Wrapped data is an “awesome way to take a look at the music that resonates with our community.”

“While it is quite different from my personal Wrapped, which is filled with South Asian artists, I am excited to take a listen and discover new artists, especially those with roots in the Greater Boston Area,” Siddiqui said in an email. “Who knows, maybe we’ll incorporate some of these tracks into our next annual citywide dance party!”

Representatives for the city of Berkeley did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Just 0.6% of listeners got Burlington, 0.3% got Berkeley, and 0.1% got Cambridge as their sound towns, according to Spotify.

“The Sound Town selected for each eligible user has the most similar taste profile to their own — based on their most streamed artists of the year and how those artists are streamed in other cities across the globe,” the spokesperson said.

Eligible users “must have at least three top artists who over-index in a particular city” to get sound town matches.

The city with the most user matches was San Luis Obispo, California, which matched 0.8% of listeners, according to Spotify.

Spotify users online also said they matched with places like Provo, Utah; Ithaca, New York; Flagstaff, Arizona; Guanajuato, Mexico; Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan; and Victoria, British Columbia.

Spotify Wrapped 2023 assigns you a 'sound town' based on your music taste - The Verge

An image showing screenshots of Spotify Wrapped matching a user to a city
Image: Spotify

This year’s Spotify Wrapped roundup is live. As was the case with previous years, it features a bundle of shareable stats that break down the most-listened artists, songs, and podcasts for 574 million users. But there are also some surprises, too, including a new system that assigns you a city based on your listening habits.

Although Spotify Wrapped largely features the same basic listening stats every year, it seems to always find fun new ways to serve them up. That element of fun is still missing from the competition like Apple Music Replay, which remains largely unchanged from last year, or YouTube Music’s seasonal / annual Recap breakdowns.

Here are some of the characters you might get assigned in Spotify Wrapped.
Here are some of the characters you might get assigned in Spotify Wrapped.

Image: Spotify

This year, you can check out your Spotify Wrapped through the app or on the web for the first time by heading to Spotify.com/Wrapped. The roundup will match you with a city — or a “sound town,” as Spotify calls it — that shares a similar taste in music based on what you’ve listened to in 2023. And like the “music personality” Spotify included with Wrapped last year, it has a “me in 2023” feature that links your listening patterns with one of 12 characters made by Spotify. Getting assigned the Luminary, for example, means you tend to “play light, upbeat music more than others,” while an Alchemist might create more playlists than others.

Alongside these treats, Spotify has added more to the metrics it includes in each year’s Wrapped. When viewing your top five artists, you’ll now see which month your listening for each artist peaked. Meanwhile, the top five genres story has a new design that represents each of your most-listened genres as ingredients in a sandwich.

Spotify Wrapped for artists offers stats on their most popular content.

There’s a Spotify Wrapped experience for artists and podcasters as well, which rounds up creators’ most popular content of the year. In addition to all this, Spotify is launching Wrapped listening parties where a “select” group of artists, such as Ava Max, Chelsea Cutler, and JVKE, can interact with fans, stream their top tracks of the year, sell merch, and more.

You may also notice the presence of Spotify’s AI DJ this year, which is supposed to guide you through your Wrapped stats and provide “commentary about some of your favorite artists, genres, songs and more.” That experience is scheduled to stick around for the first week that you can get your 2023 Wrapped data.

Update November 29th, 8:29AM ET: Noted that Spotify Wrapped is available on the web for the first time.

Apple will finally let you change your iPhone's default notification sound - Macworld

If you don’t like the default notification sound on your iPhone, tough luck. Apple hasn’t provided any means of changing it going back as far as we can remember–the iPhone’s ascending three-note sound has become somewhat synonymous with smartphone notifications.

Of course, Apple has always let you change the notification sound for certain apps such as Messages Mail and even sometimes for specific types of notifications (like your Ring doorbell), but if it doesn’t, you get what Apple gives you which, until iOS 17 was called Tri-tone. When iOS 17 launched, Apple updated a bunch of tones and sounds, changing the default alert from Tri-tone to Rebound. It’s a less harsh sound, but some complain it’s also less noticeable and perhaps quieter, and they want to go back. Until now, they couldn’t.

With iOS 17.2, Apple’s going to do you one better: Not only can you restore the sound to Tri-tone, you can finally change the default notification sound and haptics to whatever you want.

First spotted in iOS 17.2 beta 4, all you have to do is open the Settings app, tap Sound & Haptics, and look for the new Default Alerts setting. Tap that and you can restore the notification sound to Tri-tone (you’ll find that within Classic), or use any other alert sound you wish. You can also change the haptics for your default sound.

It’s an overdue change, to say the least. Couples everywhere will no longer need to ask “Was that my phone or yours?” when an alert comes in. Thank you, Apple.

Their new US dates begin on April 4 in Pittsburgh and run through mid-May, stopping in New Haven, Raleigh, Asheville, New Orleans, Tucson, San Diego, Reno, Denver, Milwaukee, Baltimore, and more.

POISON THE WELL

Poison The Well have added more dates to their upcoming You Come Before You 20th anniversary run, including intimate shows in Fullerton, Chicago, and Brooklyn.

HELLFEST 2024

France’s Hellfest has announced the lineup for its 17th edition, happening on June 27-30 in Clisson. Featuring over 200 bands across six stages for 2024, it’s headlined by Avenged Sevenfold on Thursday 6/27, Machine Head on Friday 6/28, Metallica on 6/29, and Foo Fighters on 6/30. KEVIN DREW (BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE)

The North American shows are his first solo dates in nine years, and run through January of 2024, starting in Halifax and wrapping up in Los Angeles.

SHEER TERROR

NYHC greats Sheer Terror are playing a Paul Bearer birthday show in January with Wisdom in Chains, and more. Pick up our exclusive vinyl variants of 1992’s Thanks fer Nuthin on red swirl, 1994’s Old, New, Borrowed and Blue on opaque gold, and 2016’s Unheard Unloved on red and black swirl, limited to 200 copies each.

DAVID BERMAN TRIBUTE

Silver Jews / Purple Mountains leader David Berman would’ve turned 57 on January 4, 2024 — he died in 2019 — but fans around the world celebrate his life and music on that day, which has since been dubbed DCBday. In NYC, there will be a DCBday show at Bowery Ballroom, where they will celebrate Silver Jews’ classic third album, American Water (which just turned 25).
