Police Raid F.C. Barcelona and Detain Four People - The New York Times

suaralifestyle.blogspot.com

The authorities have been investigating the club’s relationship with a company that produced disparaging content about Lionel Messi, Gerard Piqué and other star players.

The police raided the headquarters of F.C. Barcelona on Monday, seizing evidence and detaining four people. The arrests, on the eve of the club’s presidential election, created another crisis for a soccer behemoth brought low by crippling debt, boardroom infighting and poor performances on the field.

A spokeswoman for Mossos d’Esquadra, Catalonia’s regional police force, said its economic crimes unit had seized evidence from Barcelona’s offices. She added that the investigation was continuing and that four people have been detained but, citing police policy, declined to name the individuals.

Several news media outlets reported that the four people detained were prominent current and former executives of the club: the former president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, who resigned in December, shortly before he was to face a vote of no confidence; Oscar Grau, the club’s chief executive; Roman Gomez Ponti, its head of legal services; and Jaume Masferrer, an adviser to Bartomeu.

Barcelona said in a statement that the club had offered “full collaboration to the legal and police authorities to help make clear facts which are subject to investigation.”

Investigators have been looking into Barcelona’s affairs for months, after incendiary revelations suggested the club had secretly hired an external marketing company to produce disparaging content about some of its most important and high-profile players, including Lionel Messi and Gerard Piqué.

The team denied any wrongdoing and hired a consultant, PWC, to complete an audit of its relationship with the marketing company, I3 Ventures, but the police continued their investigation.

The police investigation into Barcelona has been closely followed by Spanish news media, which has called the affair “Barcagate.” Bartomeu said in February that he had no idea the company was involved in spreading negative content targeting Barcelona players, and although the club terminated the contract, the stain remained.

The raid on the club’s offices come just days before more than 140,000 Barcelona members will elect Bartomeu’s successor, and it is another hit to the reputation of a club that for years had portrayed itself as a benchmark in world soccer. The team liked to portray itself as a team with values that put it in a class of its own, operated under the slogan, “More than a club.”

Bartomeu’s resignation came months after a humiliating 8-2 defeat to Bayern Munich that eliminated the club from last season’s Champions League, Europe’s richest club soccer competition, and a public falling out with Messi, arguably the greatest player in the game’s history.

Messi described Bartomeu’s board as “a disaster” and demanded to be allowed to leave the club he joined as a 13-year-old from Argentina. The club refused Messi’s request and the player backed down and announced he would stay rather than drag the issue through the courts.

Messi’s contract allows him to leave at the end of this season, but he has said he has not decided what he will do.

Bartomeu has been fighting negative headlines for more than a year, and his tenure as president, which began amid an earlier scandal in 2014, has been marked by periods of turbulence. Last spring, six members of the club’s board resigned and went public with their criticism of Bartomeu.

At the heart of their falling out was the contract with I3 Ventures, and allegations that it was behind fake social media accounts — purporting to be Barcelona supporters — that attacked those perceived to Bartomeu’s opponents. Those included Victor Font, an outspoken candidate to be the club’s next president, and popular players like Messi and Piqué.

The team’s finances are also more precarious than at any time in its recent history. Earlier this year, it published financial statements showing it owed more than 1 billion euros, about $1.2 billion, to its lenders, tax officials and rival clubs, with more than 600 million euros required to be paid in the short term.

The club has entered emergency talks with banks to find a solution to its problems, and club officials are also weighing selling some of the team’s commercial assets to investors to raise as much as $250 million.

The club has played without spectators this season because of the coronavirus pandemic, as is the case for most teams in Europe, and the team’s revenue forecasts have cratered. The club’s cavernous Nou Camp stadium and museum are ordinarily two of the most visited tourist sites in Spain, and the loss of those revenues and other income could reach as much as 600 million euros, club executives recently told The Times.

On the field, the picture is hardly better.

Even though Messi returned, the club’s performance has been a shadow of its dominating past. Barcelona endured yet another Champions League humiliation last month, losing by 4-1 against Paris St.-Germain in the first leg of its two-game, round-of-16 match. The defeat means elimination from this year’s tournament is all but assured.

Barcelona has rallied from a poor start to move into second place in the Spanish league table, but it is still five points behind the leader, Atlético Madrid, whose success in part has been attributed to the goals of striker Luis Suarez, whose contract was canceled by Barcelona before the start of season.

Fantasy Basketball: Week 11 Start/sits, teams with four and five games to target, positional breakdowns - CBS Sports

suaralifestyle.blogspot.com
derrick-jones-1400.jpg

Week 11 shapes up as one of the most interesting periods of the season because it actually constitutes a two-week timeframe that wraps around the All-Star break. This leaves us with a unique and somewhat unbalanced schedule at either end of the spectrum: three teams have six games, while one, the defending champion Los Angeles Lakers, will play just three times. Meanwhile, the vast majority of the league has four or five games on the schedule.

Of course, more games means more opportunities for Fantasy points, but the five-day break in action adds some unpredictability. All-Star Weekend is the unofficial halfway point of the NBA season, and it's often used as a marker for evaluating longer-term injuries, as well as a team's standing in the league. As a result, rotations can shift over the course of just a few days, and you may not have the opportunity to make any lineup changes.

This week, it's more important than ever to use the schedule to your advantage. Not only does it maximize your chances to score big, but it also mitigates the risk of players woefully underperforming their expectations.

Here's how the schedule breaks down:

Teams with six games: New Orleans Pelicans, Portland Trail Blazers, San Antonio Spurs

Teams with five games: Atlanta Hawks, Chicago Bulls, Dallas Mavericks, Denver Nuggets, Houston Rockets, Indiana Pacers, Memphis Grizzlies, Miami Heat, Oklahoma City Thunder, Orlando Magic, Philadelphia 76ers, Toronto Raptors, Washington Wizards

Teams with four games: Boston Celtics, Brooklyn Nets, Charlotte Hornets, Cleveland Cavaliers, Detroit Pistons, Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Clippers, Milwaukee Bucks, Minnesota Timberwolves, New York Knicks, Phoenix Suns, Sacramento Kings, Utah Jazz

Teams with three games: Los Angeles Lakers

Without further ado, let's examine some of the tougher start/sit decisions for Week 11:

Guards

Start: Justin Holiday, Pacers

33% start rate in CBS leagues

We're at the point of the season where we can safely assume Holiday's improved all-around performance isn't a fluke. The veteran is still boasting career-best shooting efficiency (46.5 percent  shooting, 41.8 percent from 3) and also averaging a career-high 4.2 rebounds per game. Holiday is also contributing an impressive 1.2 steals per contest and shooting 82.0 percent from the free-throw line. The 31-year-old is averaging 12.8 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2.3 assists heading into his five-game schedule, and he offers enough complementary production to justify starting on a five-game week.

Start: Goran Dragic, Heat

34% start rate in CBS leagues

Dragic already logged 33 minutes in only his second game back from his nine-game absence due to an ankle injury, scoring 26 points off the bench against the Jazz on Friday night. He followed up with a well-rounded 13 points, four rebounds, three assists and a steal in Sunday's win over Atlanta. Dragic will get three of his five upcoming games in his Week 11 schedule after the All-Star break, which will give him even more time to get back to full health. When he's at 100 percent, Dragic is a steady source of scoring, assists and 3s, with some rebounds and steals sprinkled in.

Sit: Buddy Hield, Kings

75% start rate in CBS leagues

Hield is coming off of a big night Sunday against Charlotte, but he has only four games on the extended schedule, and he was shooting under 35 percent from the field in the eight games leading into Sunday night. That span included three single-digit scoring tallies and modest averages of 3.4 rebounds and 2.8 assists. Hield has his hot streaks when he's one of the best shooters in the NBA, but he's been too inconsistent of late to play over a comparable five- or six-game player.

Forwards

Start: Derrick Jones, Trail Blazers

15% start rate in CBS leagues

Jones gets the benefit of six games over the next two weeks, and he's likely to continue working without fellow wing C.J. McCollum, who coach Terry Stotts recently said isn't close to returning from his foot injury. Jones is averaging 12.3 points -- on red-hot 64.7 percent shooting, including 46.7 percent from 3 – 6.5 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 2.0 blocks across 29.8 minutes over his last six games. While the elite efficiency is going to be difficult to keep up over an extended period, Jones has typically been an excellent shooter from two-point range, and his much-needed defensive versatility should keep him in a major role. Jones has dipped under 29 minutes only once in his last seven contests.

Start: Danuel House, Rockets

12% start rate in CBS leagues

House is another wing who's been coming on recently, as he's capitalized on a return to the first unit by averaging 13.0 points (51.1 percent shooting; 50.0 percent from 3), 4.8 rebounds and 2.0 assists across 30.0 minutes in his first five games back as the starting small forward. With Christian Wood (ankle) out through at least the All-Star break, House should continue to see elevated minutes. And while he's prone to poor shooting nights, House is a high-volume 3-point shooter who's capable of adding contributions in steals and blocks.

Also consider: Luguentz Dort, Thunder (21% start rate in CBS leagues)

Sit: LeBron James, Lakers

98% start rate in CBS leagues

I know, I know -- you didn't spend a high pick on James to sit him on your bench, but hear me out: The Lakers are the only team with three games over the next two weeks, so James, while capable of exploding for a triple-double on any given night, is at a major disadvantage. The MVP favorite's averages over the last 10 games entering Sunday's blowout – 26.2 points, 9.3 rebounds, 8.3 assists and 1.3 steals – are certainly formidable, but they're not irreplaceable. You shouldn't bench James in favor of a four-game player, or even most five-game players, but if you have a productive six-game option, it's not the worst idea to maximize your bites at the apple.

Centers

Start:  Steven Adams, Pelicans

39% start rate in CBS leagues

Adams is less-involved offensively in New Orleans than he was during his recent Thunder seasons, but he's still a force on the glass and is also equaling a career high with 2.3 assists per contest. Adams is averaging a modest 8.2 points per game, but he's shooting a career-high 61.8 percent from the field. His blocks are also down this year, yet he has multiple blocks in three of the past five contests. While there's still risk involved in rostering him due to his inconsistent offensive production, the fact Adams has six games in Week 11 helps mitigate some of the risk.

Start: Wendell Carter, Bulls

50% start rate in CBS leagues

Carter claims a spot in this space for the second straight week, as he earned the distinction with a strong Week 10 effort. The Raptors' COVID-19 issues claimed Carter's fourth game of Week 10 on Sunday, but he went off for a pair of double-doubles that also featured multiple steals and blocks in his first two outings. Carter was a complete non-factor in Friday's loss to Phoenix, but the Bulls draw five games in Week 11, so he'll have a good chance to outpace several big men in his tier.

Sit: Chris Boucher, Raptors

65% start rate in CBS leagues

Boucher started the Raptors' most recent game Friday against Houston and blocked three shots in 28 minutes. With Pascal Siakam out, Boucher should be in line for increased minutes at the five. However, he carries major risk heading into the week. For starters, there's no guarantee the Raptors will even take the floor Tuesday against the Pistons as they battle the COVID-19 issues that wiped out Sunday's game. Even if that game goes on as scheduled, Boucher may only have two games remaining as a starter before Siakam returns after the All-Star break, placing him back for the final three games of Week 11. It's also worth noting that prior to Boucher hasn't been overly productive in his two games as a starter, averaging just 8.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.5 blocks across 25.0 minutes. The blocks and 3s are worth chasing, but before you lock Boucher into any lineups, make sure the Raptors are set to play their full schedule.

Wijnaldum makes Liverpool top-four admission after seeing defending champions snap losing run - Goal.com

suaralifestyle.blogspot.com

The Reds returned to winning ways in a meeting with Sheffield United, but are still far from guaranteed to secure a Champions League spot

Georginio Wijnaldum admits Liverpool are relying on the odd “slip” from those above them in order to secure a top-four finish this season.

The defending Premier League champions have been knocked from the loftiest of perches this season, with an unfortunate run of injuries conspiring against them.

A four-match losing run was snapped last time out against Sheffield United, but Jurgen Klopp’s side remain sixth in the table and playing catch-up on the Champions League spots.

What has been said?

Quizzed by Liverpool’s official website on the importance of getting back to winning ways, Wijnaldum said: “That’s what we have to do if we want to finish in the top four. We have to put a run together and just hope the teams above us slip.

“We can only control our own performances so we have to look at it game by game, give everything and try to win the games.

“I think it’s a good thing if you win a lot in a row, but I think this is a good one to stop the losses that we have had before.

“I think this is really good for the team and it gives a good feeling again [ahead of] the next game and also [lifts] our confidence.”

How is Liverpool’s form looking?

Curtis Jones Liverpool 2020-21

The Reds headed to Bramall Lane in the midst of their worst run of Premier League form since 2002.

A fifth successive reversal was avoided in South Yorkshire, with a Curtis Jones strike and Kean Bryan own goal seeing Klopp’s men to a much-needed victory.

Liverpool are still two points adrift of the top four, but the pack in that battle are bunching together and there remains all to play for.

The bigger picture

The big games are set to keep on coming for Liverpool, with a home date against Chelsea next on the agenda.

Fellow top-four hopefuls are due at Anfield on Thursday for a contest that has plenty riding on it.

The Reds have come unstuck in their last four league outings on home soil – the first time that has happened in 98 years.

Klopp will be eager to dig his team out of that rut when facing fellow countryman Thomas Tuchel, with key men starting to edge their way back into contention for Liverpool at a crucial stage of the 2020-21 campaign.

Sense Of Sound - MTPR

In this episode, three writers have tuned into their sense of sound. The sound of memory, the sound of solace, and the sound of place.

Jay Kettering: Doreen (as read by Nathan Adkins) (short story)

The narrator gets broken down and rebuilt by a place. More specifically, by the sound of a place.

Chris Sand: Radio Works Fine (song)

It’s about dudes and their hard-luck lives, but how we can overcome.

Robert Lee: Sounds You Can Feel (poem)

A man hears the passing train cars of his youth, and as time chugs along, he keeps his eyes on the tracks and wonders where they will lead him.

NCAA Three Stars: Week Four - Lacrosse Bucket

suaralifestyle.blogspot.com

(Photos: Hofstra, Delaware & Duke Athletics)

The fourth week of the 2021 NCAA season is officially in the books and with every conference besides the MAAC now having started, the 2021 season is officially in full swing!

Here’s our three stars from week four of the season:

First Star

Ryan Tierney, Attack, Hofstra

Our first reoccurring player of the season, Ryan Tierney has simply been out of this world for the Pride early on in the 2021 season. On Saturday, the fifth-year attackman had one of the best performances of his entire college career, putting up 11 points on eight goals and three assists in a 20-17 win over rival Stony Brook. His performance on Saturday puts him two goals away from the Hofstra career goal record (140) and to third-all-time in career points in program history with 210. He is also two goal away from tying the CAA career points record (212) that was set by former Delaware standout Curtis Dickson.

Second Star

Mike Robinson, Attack, Delaware

The Delaware attack unit is arguably the best in the CAA. And in their two games last week Mike Robinson stole the headlines. Delaware beat Saint Joseph’s 16-13 on Tuesday and Delaware Bellarmine 14-11 on Sunday. Robinson accounted for 12 of those combined 30 goals, which is 40% of all their goals scored last week. Robinson tallied a career-best nine goals against the Hawks and then had a hat trick against the Knights.

Third Star

Joe Robertson, Attack, Duke

Since coming back from injury last season and missing the Blue Devils’ first two games this season, Robertson has made a major impact on a uber talented Duke offense. In the Blue Devils’ 17-7 win over Air Force on Saturday, Robertson put up a career-best 10 points (7G/3A).

Honorable Mention

A.J. Fox, Goalie, Holy Cross – 17 saves vs Sacred Heart

Pat Kavanagh, Attack, Notre Dame – Eight points (1G/7A) vs Robert Morris

Brendan Curry, Midfield, Syracuse – Seven points (3G/4A) vs Virginia

Brendan Nicthern, Attack, Army – Seven points (4G/3A) vs Saint Joseph’s

Kyle Gallagher, Faceoff, Notre Dame – 13-for-19 (87%) vs Robert Morris
