Detroit's Assemble Sound Selects 14 Artists for 2020 Residency - Billboard

The year-long program offers resources dedicated to fostering the careers of local artists.

Assemble Sound, a Detroit-based music company that was founded in 2015 to help foster the careers of local musicians, has selected 14 artists for its 2020 studio residency, it was announced Monday (Feb. 3). Additionally, the company has unveiled a new year-long partnership with Stroh’s Brewing Company to grow the residency program, including the establishment of a $20,000 fund that will allow selected artists to request cash grants to cover project-related expenses such as music videos, album artwork, live show development and travel budgets.

The Assemble Sound studio residency is a year-long program geared toward artists who are focused on songwriting, production and/or performance full-time. Those selected are given free 24/7 access to Assemble’s four recording studios (located in a historic 19th century church) for the entire year. They also participate in weekly programs, ranging from song critiques to industry workshops. Participating artists retain 100 percent of the rights to the music they create during the residency.

The selected artists for 2020 are Hala, Supercoolwicked, Curtis Roach, Kynzi, whiterosemoxie, Mark Whalen, Primer, Uribi, Tiny Jag, Michael Tocco, Gabriel Duran, Jay Cribbs, Mayaeni and Thibault Ruellan.

“Since Assemble Sound started, our work has been anchored in giving artists access to our space to create and learn together,” said Assemble Sound general manager Garret Koehler in a statement. “Our studio residency is at the core of that work, and partnering with Stroh’s enables us to execute an unprecedented program with dedicated staff, weekly workshops, and a $20,000 fund for artist microgrants. Nothing less would do justice to the level of talent represented by this years’ class of new Artist Residents.”

Past Assemble Sound residents including Neon Gold Records artist Jax Anderson; Yoshi Flower, now signed to Interscope; rapper Sam Austins, who recently won Tidal’s “Unplugged” artist grant; singer Siena Liggins, who was included on Billboard’s 2018 list of 10 emerging LGBTQ artists; and Tunde Olaniran, who last year was honored with the United States Artists Award and named the Community Engagement Research Resident at the University of Michigan.
