'Pop' sound prompts precautionary evacuation of Superior Husky refinery - Duluth News Tribune

Employees were evacuated at Husky Energy's refinery in Superior on Thursday, after reports of a "pop" sound from a tower on the property.

Gas and electric power were shut off and a nearby public road was blocked, after the sound was heard and defects were noted in a tower located on Husky Refinery's south side, the Superior Police Department wrote in a news release.

There is no risk of fire, explosion, release of chemical or other dangers to the public, the news release read.

If the tower collapses, nothing around the tower, if struck, would cause a danger to the community, according to the department.

They're currently assessing the issue and are working to remedy it in a safe and timely manner, the release reads.

Nearby public roadway Stinson Avenue is within the potential "fall zone," and has been blocked. It's unclear how long it will be closed.

The refinery was the site of an explosion and fire on April 26, 2018 that injured 36 people and led to the evacuation of much of Superior.

Out of commission since the explosion and fire, the refinery began rebuilding in September 2019.
