Sound Tigers come back to beat Springfield - CTPost

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Kieffer Bellows scored two goals in his return from a stint in the NHL, and the Bridgeport Sound Tigers came from behind to beat the Springfield Thunderbirds 6-3 Friday night at MassMutual Center.

Veteran defenseman Thomas Hickey had three assists in Bridgeport's four-goal second period, and Jeff Kubiak had a pair of assists. Christopher Gibson made 37 saves to help end a four-game winless streak.

The New York Islanders, Bridgeport’s parent club, reassigned winger Josh Ho-Sang to the San Antonio Rampage earlier in the day. Ho-Sang is the Sound Tigers’ all-time 12th-leading scorer with 120 points in 172 games.

The right winger had been told to stay home from Bridgeport at the start of the season after not making the Islanders’ opening-night roster; Ho-Sang told the Athletic he had requested a trade last season. He returned before Christmas and had played 16 games this season for the Sound Tigers. He scored the game-winning goal Friday night in his first game for the Rampage.

Bridgeport called up Nic Pierog from Worcester (ECHL) to take Ho-Sang's place in the lineup.

The Thunderbirds took a 2-0 lead in the second period on a goal by former Quinnipiac defenseman Chase Priskie, making his Springfield debut after the Carolina Hurricanes traded him on Monday to the Florida Panthers.

But Bridgeport's comeback began with a bodycheck from Priskie's onetime Bobcats teammate Travis St. Denis. The hit and Nick Schilkey's pass sent Mason Jobst in for a breakaway goal.

St. Denis tipped in a Sebastian Aho shot 25 seconds later. Bellows scored four and a half minutes later to give Bridgeport a 3-2 lead, and Oliver Wahlstrom scored in the last minute of the period.

Bellows (his 18th) and Kyle Burroughs (empty-net) scored in the third after Daniel Audette's power-play goal cut the Sound Tigers' lead to one.

Bridgeport was 3-13 in its past 16 visits to MassMutual Center, beginning with a 7-0 whitewash that knocked Bridgeport out of playoff contention in 2016-17. But this was the second-most goals the Sound Tigers have ever scored in 19 seasons of visits to Springfield.

Bridgeport hosts Hartford on Saturday night and Binghamton late Sunday afternoon.

This story has been corrected. An earlier version used information from a game earlier this season.
