Album review: Ayla Brook & the Sound Men's glorious Desolation Sounds - Edmonton Journal

Another dreamy highlight is the traditional Little Birdie — oh, and a very delicious update of Leon Russell’s She Smiles Like a River, which also summons water.

The punchy and penultimate exit track Refuge Cove namedrops the album title again, and the cigarette at the end of it all is a float down the river at North Country Fair, the blues-in-a-good-way original Who Are You, that big warm bass a heartbeat heard through your lover’s sweater.

The band releases Desolation Sounds with a concert Thursday, March 26 at Rocky Mountain Icehouse with another wonderful local act, The Hearts.

There are lot of great local releases coming up — including 100 Mile House, Marlaena Moore and Wares — and Ryan Garner and I will be reviewing them all in the next few weeks, so stay (as it were) tuned.

For now, this album is well worth isolating to, if you want to look on the bright side of impending desolation.
