Deadline pickups lead Binghamton past Sound Tigers - CTPost

BRIDGEPORT — Two players who arrived with the Binghamton Devils at the Feb. 24 NHL trade deadline made a difference Sunday night in their 1-0 win over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at Webster Bank Arena.

Zane McIntyre, picked up by parent New Jersey in a trade from Vancouver, made 36 saves, and Janne Kuokkanen, acquired by the Devils from the Carolina Hurricanes at the deadline as part of a package for defenseman Sami Vatanen, scored midway through the second period.

McIntyre made an initial save on a Bridgeport rush with a minute and a half left in the second period, then got across left-to-right to deny Ryan Bourque's rebound try with his right pad.

He also made a left-pad save on Nic Pierog's breakaway in the second and stopped Nick Schilkey's one-timer from the left circle with 9:55 left.

Schilkey, a teammate of Kuokkanen's on last seasons Calder Cup-champion Charlotte Checkers, also hit the post to McIntyre's right 5:20 into the third.

Bridgeport disrupted a pass and got a clear a minute into a long Devils two-man advantage midway through the second period. But Binghamton regrouped and carried into the Sound Tigers zone. Chris Conner's pass set up Kuokkanen's one-timer from the right circle, and it snuck under Christopher Gibson as the Bridgeport goalie got across the crease.

The Devils nearly broke the scoreless tie early in the second period. Brett Seney's pass across the front of the net found Nick Merkley in the right circle for a one-timer with most of an open net to shoot at. Bridgeport defenseman Seth Helgeson got his stick on the shot and deflected it wide.

Attendance was 4,133.

Goalie Jared Coreau was scratched after leaving Saturday night's game with a little over nine minutes to go, appearing injured after making a save a few seconds earlier.

Linus Soderstrom backed up Gibson, dressing in an AHL game for the second time. Soderstrom, dealing with an undisclosed lower-body injury but practicing for the past few weeks, had last dressed in a game on Nov. 13 for the Worcester Railers, Bridgeport's ECHL affiliate.

The AHL trade deadline is Monday at 3 p.m. The Sound Tigers already saw one change to their roster after the NHL trade deadline, with winger Josh Ho-Sang reassigned to San Antonio on Friday.
