Globemasters will rumble the skies above Puget Sound Friday - Kitsap Sun

BREMERTON — Get ready for a fly-by from the Globemasters.

For a brief time Friday afternoon, the skies over Puget Sound will rumble with the engine sounds of the American military's preeminent cargo workhorse. Based at Joint Base Lewis McChord, two of the mammoth Boeing C-17 Globemaster III jetliners will crisscross the sound in honor of frontline workers.

“We are grateful for the opportunity to show our appreciation to local heroes, and look forward to a time when we can embrace one another without fear,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Robert V. Lankford, commander of the Joint Base's 62nd Airlift Wing operations group, in announcing the Friday flyover.

Following takeoff from JBLM around 12:30 p.m., the planes will begin south toward Olympia and then head north through Gig Harbor and the Kitsap Peninsula. They're expected to pass over Harrison Medical Center at 1 p.m. and then continue north over Jefferson County and Whidbey Island before turning south toward Seattle.

The Globemaster — sometimes called "the moose," because of its shape and sound it makes refueling — possesses four turbofan engines each packing more than 40,000 pounds of thrust. The 174-foot-long plane is capable of carrying up to 585,000 pounds, be it for transporting troops and cargo or performing airlifts and airdrops.

It's one of many "Air Force Salutes" flyovers taking place in the skies over the nation’s largest metropolitan areas, along with other military branches and civilian aircraft. On Wednesday, the Navy's Blue Angels planned to conduct flights honoring such frontline workers over Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston and New Orleans. On Friday, seven aircraft from the Northwest "BeechBoys" team flew out of Bremerton National Airport in their Beechcraft planes for a tribute to the medical community.
