Maine CDC reports four more coronavirus deaths, 20 more cases at Tyson - Press Herald

The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported four additional deaths of individuals with coronavirus on Tuesday, as well as 20 more cases in an outbreak at a poultry processing plant in Portland.

The Tyson Foods plant has been closed since Friday for sanitizing, and Dr. Nirav Shah, Maine CDC director, said managers have agreed to keep the plant closed for a few more days to allow the CDC to trace the contacts of infected workers. Tyson employs about 400 people, including many recent immigrants to Maine.

Tyson’s employees are being tested, and 37 have tested positive to date, including 20 whose test results were received Tuesday, five whose results were received Monday and 12 who previously tested positive, Shah said at an afternoon news briefing.

To date, 1,226 people have tested positive for the COVID-19 disease caused by the coronavirus in Maine, according to the latest figures from the Maine CDC. The 21 new confirmed or probable cases represents an 18 percent increase from one week earlier, reflecting a steady uptick but not the surges that some other states are experiencing.

Shah said the 1,226 positive tests do not include the 20 tests reported Tuesday from Tyson shortly before the briefing.

The four additional fatalities reported Tuesday include two people in Kennebec County, a man and a woman who were both in their 70s; and two men in Cumberland County, one in his 70s and one in his 80s, Shah. The four deaths raise the toll to date in Maine to 61.

The Maine CDC also reported that 741 people have now recovered from COVID-19, representing 60 percent of all confirmed or probably cases tracked by the agency. After accounting for those recoveries and the 61 deaths, Maine had 424 active cases of the disease, a decrease of four since Monday.

Maine CDC is also tracking outbreaks at homeless shelters in Portland and Bangor as well as at several nursing homes, including the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough and the Augusta Center for Health and Rehabilitation.
