A man was killed and four people wounded — including two children — as gunfire erupted at a large block party in south Houston, police said.
The shooting happened around 9:11 p.m. in the 9600 block of Scott Street, where about 500 people were gathered. In a neighboring empty field, bouncy castles were pitched for kids to play in.
After reviewing surveillance footage of the shooting, investigators believe there were at least five different gunmen who opened fire.
Police arrived within minutes of the shooting but the bulk of party-goers then scattered, said Ron Borza, a Houston police commander.
Two children, a toddler and 12-year-old girl, were found with gunshots to the leg. The toddler’s mother, 20, was likely shot in the arms while holding her child, Borza said. Another 20-year-old woman was shot in the leg.
A 22-year-old man who was also shot and taken to Ben Taub hospital later died, the police commander continued.
Authorities do not know what prompted the gunfire. Investigators were interviewing a man, with plans to take him to HPD headquarters to talk to him further, in hopes of learning who the gunmen were.
Borza said presumed family members of some shooting victims arrived at the scene and were taken into custody after getting into an altercation with police. He did not elaborate on the extent of the fight but said he believed that the relatives did not realize that their loved ones had already been taken to the hospital.
