Senior Moments: Finding solace in the sound of a horn - Redlands Daily Facts

Taps came home to me on Memorial Day.

It was just a short walk up the street to a neighbor’s front lawn. Their friend, Keith Beyer, an Army trumpet player who trains trumpeters for military funerals, stood tall and straight as the sound of his horn sent out a breath of peace.

You could almost hear the silent reflections of the gathered neighbors, masked and standing six feet from each other, hands over hearts filled with stories. I was picturing the flag covering my husband’s coffin. Perhaps the soldier who played taps at George’s funeral had been trained by this kind young man who stood in the blistering sun to gift a neighborhood with solace.

The upside of our quarantine has been the creativity of the community to, In the words of Michelle Obama, “go high.” I thought about this as I watched Keith walk down to the next block where he played taps in front of the home of a WWII veteran.

Kindness and art might be our best friends right now.

When I turn off the news and stop seeing our society in statistics, I am awed by the drive and inventiveness of people to bring light to a dark time. To use their talents as a balm to soothe.

The Jfed Players community theater troupe is embracing that concept. Undaunted by having to postpone their spring musical until 2021, the ensemble has created a virtual theater performance. “Looking Back, Moving Forward,” is filled with music, monologue  and memories from past shows plus a glimpse into next year’s musical, “A Little Night Music.”

I am happy to be a tiny cog in this wonderful wheel by reprising a scene from a “Twilight Zone” episode where George and I played a married couple. For two minutes on a virtual stage, I get to be his wife again. And for a whole hour, the audience gets to reminisce and even sing along with some favorite show tunes.

Kindness and art. Where there’s a need, there’s a path.

You can find this performance on the JFed players Facebook page this Sunday, May 31, at 5 PM.  https://ift.tt/3gxXfT3
