VOTE for North Jersey’s Greatest Male Athlete: Final Four - NorthJersey.com

suaralifestyle.blogspot.com

Last year, we published the North Jersey All-Decade teams, recognizing the top athletes of the 2010s. But that got us thinking: Who is North Jersey's best athlete of all-time?

We came up with the top 64 male and top 64 female athletes in North Jersey history, and seeded them March Madness-style into four regions for the men and four regions for the women.

Now we've reached the Men's Final Four. The athletes who get the most votes in this poll will advance to the championship.

The first match-up pits two of New Jersey greatest wrestlers of all time against each other, and the second match-up pits a football star against a track star who was pretty good at football too.

The polls close at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 29.

Frank Cagnina vs. Nick Suriano

Frank Cagnina: He went 164-4 for Queen of Peace and Bergen Catholic wrestling, setting the state record for career wins. He captured three state championships and finished third in the other, to go along with four BCCA, four district and four region championships. He won his final 84 matches.

Nick Suriano: The Paramus native is the most decorated New Jersey wrestler of all-time. He won four state championships, becoming the second to do it while undefeated. He also led the Crusaders to four team titles. After going 159-0 in high school, he broke new ground at Rutgers as its first national wrestling champion.

Brian Toal vs. Andy Papathanassiou

Brian Toal: He was a threat on both sides of the ball and a whiz on special teams for Don Bosco. In his last three seasons, he had 277 tackles, 31 sacks and seven blocked punts. He went on to play at Boston College.

Andy Papathanassiou: He was The Record's Athlete of the Century after dominating on the track from 1983-85 while at Emerson. He set records and won four sectional titles, four county group titles, four league titles, three Bergen Meet of Champs titles, and the 1984 State Meet of Champions crown. He ran track and played football at Stanford.
