Decades-old Valley restaurant Four N 20 has closed in Van Nuys/Sherman Oaks, ending a run that began in 1969 with serious local love for pie; the Valley Village location says it is taking things “day by day.”
Four N 20 is perhaps best known for its seasonal rotation of mostly fruit pies, though in the years since first opening in Valley Village the company branched out to become a duo of full-service restaurants with a diner bent, focusing on everything from all day breakfast, burgers, and salads to pasta and seafood dinners. The outbreak of the novel coronavirus worldwide ground that business to a halt in early March, and now, after more than four decades, the restaurants are no more, per a simple “thanks for the memories” notice posted to Facebook last Saturday night. “Not the way we wanted to go, but a new chapter awaits,” the family said in updated comments on the post.
The loss of Four N 20’s Sherman Oaks location comes as many other restaurants across greater Los Angeles struggle to survive, first as a result of the pandemic and the lockdowns that followed, and more recently with a hectic reopening schedule and rolling curfews, which only just lifted today. Restaurants like Auburn, Bon Temps (both James Beard-nominated this year), and the timeless Stan’s Donuts and Swingers on Beverly have all closed since March.
Update: Four N 20’s Valley Village location is still operating for business, but when asked if they were planning to close permanently, a worker at the restaurant said they were “taking it day by day.”
