British promoter Eddie Hearn's vision of backyard boxing amid the quarantine has become a reality with the launch of Matchroom Fight Camp.
The four-card summer series runs Aug. 1-22 on the grounds of Hearn's home and Matchroom HQ headquarters in Brentwood, Essex, overlooking the city of London. All four shows will air in the U.S. on DAZN while the first three will run in the United Kingdom on Sky Sports and the fourth on Sky Sports Box Office.
The unique outdoor series will be headlined by its strongest and final show of the month on Saturday, Aug. 22 when Dillian Whyte (27-1, 18 KOs), the mandatory opponent for Tyson Fury's WBC heavyweight title, defends his interim belt against Alexander Povetkin (35-2-1, 24 KOs). The card will also feature Irish star Katie Taylor (15-0, 6 KOs) in a defense of her undisputed women's lightweight titles against a to be determined opponent.
"Fight Camp ends with fireworks as Dillian Whyte risks his world title ambitions against the big-hitting Alexander Povetkin," Sky Sports head of boxing development Adam Smith said. "Katie Taylor can cement her status as one of the sport's finest fighters when she returns to action on another fantastic bill. We're back with a red-hot line-up of live boxing!"
The remaining cards feature a mixture of promising British prospects under the Matchroom Sport banner as Sam Eggington (28-6, 17 KOs) takes on Ted Cheeseman (15-2-1, 9 KOs) in a junior middleweight main event on Saturday, Aug. 1.
The next two shows will take place on Friday nights including Terri Harper (10-0, 5 KOs) defending her WBC junior lightweight title against British rival Natasha Jones (9-1, 7 KOs) in the Aug. 7 headliner and Felix Cash (12-0, 8 KOs) putting his Commonwealth middleweight title at stake on Aug. 14 Jason Wellborn (24-8, 7 KOs).
