CROCKETT — Four people, including two teens and a 21-year-old, died Tuesday night when an SUV plunged off the Carquinez Bridge, the California Highway patrol said.

The two men were identified Wednesday afternoon as Christopher Mota, 21, of Rodeo and Kyle Erickson, 19, of Pittsburg. One of the women was identified as 19-year-old Perla Navarro, of Richmond.

The identity of the fourth victim was not released, because her family still had not been notified. The CHP said the driver was a woman,.

According to the CHP, the four were in an Infiniti SUV driving east on Interstate 80 around 8:40 p.m. when the SUV suddenly veered off the freeway, over a concrete barrier and off the elevated portion of the bridge just east of the Pomona Road exit. Investigators did not speculate about what may have caused the vehicle to swerve; it did not strike any other cars on the roadway, even as it moved across all lanes of traffic.

The SUV then struck a stationary freight train, caromed off and hit the ground near the C & H Sugar factory on the edge of the water.

A witness recorded the crash on a dashboard camera and provided it to authorities, the CHP said.

Contra Costa Sheriff’s deputies and Crockett-Carquinez Fire personnel also responded to the scene. All four inside the car had to be cut free from the wreckage and were pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators did not immediately know whether drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash. The Contra Costa County Coroner’s Office will perform the autopsies.

Several lanes of the bridge were closed as investigators processed the scene. All lanes including the Pomona Street off-ramp, reopened just before 10:30 p.m.

What caused the SUV to leave the roadway was under investigation.  The CHP is looking for witnesses and anyone with information is asked to call the CHP’s Fairfield office at 707-428-2100.

Staff writer Harry Harris contributed to this report.
