A search is underway for a missing swimmer in the Pamlico Sound in between Avon and Buxton as of 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 10.
The missing swimmer is an 18-year-old male from Ripley, West Virginia, and the swimmer was last seen roughly 100 yards from the shoreline at approximately 2p.m., near the edge of a historically dredged, deep water area.
Personnel from the Dare County EMS, Dare County Sheriff’s Office, Hatteras Island Rescue Squad, National Park Service, and the U.S. Coast Guard were on the scene from Kite Point to Canadian Hole as of 3:30 p.m., and both a helicopter and on-the-water vessels are currently involved in the search.
Emergency vehicles may be parked on the sides of N.C. Highway 12 throughout Wednesday afternoon as the search continues. Travelers are advised to use caution and to drive slowly in between Avon and Buxton, and to watch for emergency vehicles as needed.
The Island Free Press will continue to post updates on the ongoing search as soon as they become available.
