A 31-year-old employee of an Outer Banks personal watercraft rental business died Friday afternoon while leading a tour on the Currituck Sound.
First responders were dispatched to the Waterview Shores North neighborhood in Grandy around 5:40 p.m. to a report of an incident involving personal watercraft, commonly referred to by the brand name “Jet Ski”.
The man was found floating face down and unresponsive in Dowdy Bay by a Good Samaritan and was immediately brought to shore, according to Currituck Fire and EMS Deputy Chief Tim Riley.
Riley said despite members of Currituck EMS performing CPR for 45 minutes, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been released.
The tour originated from a rental business in Duck, Riley said. Several of the watercraft reportedly had experienced mechanical issues prior to the incident due to thick vegetation in the sound.
N.C. Wildlife Commission Law Enforcement is in charge of the investigation, and had not issued a report as of Saturday evening.
