PITTSBURGH—Pitt football will feature some of the country's elite performers this season according to Phil Steele, one of college football's foremost experts.
Four Panthers have been named to the Phil Steele Preseason All-America Team: junior safety Paris Ford, junior defensive tackle Jaylen Twyman, senior defensive end Patrick Jones II and senior center Jimmy Morrissey.
Ford and Twyman were first-team selections, making Pitt the only school to have multiple defensive players earn that designation. Jones was named to the second team, while Morrissey received fourth-team recognition.
Ford (Pittsburgh, Pa./Steel Valley), hailed as the Panthers' most devastating hitter in at least two decades, led Pitt last year in tackles (97) and interceptions (three), while ranking second in pass breakups (11) and forced fumbles (three).
This is the third outlet to name Ford a preseason All-American. He previously was recognized by Athlon and Sporting News.
Twyman (Washington D.C./H.D. Woodson) was a second team All-American last season after compiling 41 stops and a team-high 12 TFLs (tied) and 10.5 sacks. He became the first interior defensive lineman to lead Pitt in sacks since all-time great Aaron Donald (11) in 2013. Twyman ranked 18th nationally with an average of 0.81 sacks per contest.
Twyman has been named a preseason All-American by six different selectors, previously being honored by Athlon, Lindy's, Sporting News, Street & Smith's and Walter Camp.
Jones (Chesapeake, Va./Grassfield) earned status as one of the top defensive ends in the ACC last year after compiling 43 tackles, 12 TFLs, 8.5 sacks, four forced fumbles and 18 QB hurries. He led the Panthers in TFLs (tied), forced fumbles and hurries, while ranking second in sacks. Jones paced the ACC and ranked sixth nationally with an average of 0.31 forced fumbles per contest.
Morrissey (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) returns as the premier center in the ACC. A vital figure in Pitt's transition to a heavier pass attack in 2019, he did not surrender a sack the entire season and also rated as the Panthers' top run blocker. Morrissey boasts 36 career starts since the 2017 campaign.
