The tournament opened with an 8-0 loss to Renner and a 12-1 win over St. Michael-Albertville (Minn.) on Friday. Mitchell Black lost 7-5 to Brandon Valley on Saturday and dropped a 6-2 decision to Prior Lake (Minn.) in Sunday’s finale.
In the opening game against Renner, Lincoln Bates had two hits for Mitchell, with Ben Wilber and Landon Soulek each recording hits. Gavin Soukup was the losing pitcher, throwing four innings, allowing three hits, four runs and striking out three. Carter Miller and Ben Wilber combined to finish the game on the mound, but Mitchell committed five errors in the loss.
A six-run opening inning helped Mitchell defeat STMA with 12 runs on eight hits. Soukup, Bates and Soulek each had two RBIs, with Soulek picking up two hits and two runs scored. Colin Stange had three runs scored. Mandel had three stolen bases in the victory. Soulek was the winning pitcher, with three hits and one earned run in four innings pitched, with Karter Sibson throwing a perfect inning of relief.
Against Brandon Valley, Mitchell trailed 4-0 before a five-run fourth inning flipped the game in its favor. Colin Stange had two RBIs, while Soukup and Peyton Mandel each scored two runs. A.J. Wilber and Ben Wilber each had an RBI in the win. A group effort on the mound included Ben Wilber, Carter Miller and Karter Sibson, with the trio allowing five hits and four earned runs.
Mitchell Black had just three hits in the final game of the weekend, led by a pair of hits from Bates, who also scored both runs. Noah Larson had the other hit, and Peyton Mandel had an RBI. Hudson Haley started the game and threw five innings, allowing nine hits, two runs (one earned) and striking out five. Larson and Bates combined to throw the last two innings.
Mitchell Black (7-11) is next in action for a 5 p.m. Tuesday doubleheader at Pierre.
SIOUX FALLS -- The Mitchell White under-13 teener baseball team had a tough weekend at the Mid-Summer Classic but salvaged a win in its finale on Sunday.
Mitchell dropped its opening game 8-7 to Renner White, before falling 10-2 to the West Fargo (N.D.) Rattlers and 9-5 to the Mankato (Minn.) Royals Maroon on Saturday. In the final game Sunday, Mitchell started strong and picked up a 8-5 win over Sioux Falls Post 15 Black.
In the opener against Renner, Tyler Sanderson drove in a pair of runs for Mitchell and Ethan Driscoll had two runs scored but Mitchell was outhit 15-5 by Renner. Carter Lee was the losing pitcher, throwing 4 1/3 innings and allowing 10 hits, four earned runs and striking out five. Sanderson recorded the final five outs, allowing five hits, two runs and striking out three.
Facing West Fargo, Syver Enga had the lone RBI and Enga, Lee and Denzel Kelley had the lone hits for Mitchell, with Lee and Kelley scoring the runs and Kelley adding two stolen bases. Hudson Borgan was the pitcher of record for Mitchell, recording 4 2/3 innings and allowing 10 hits, eight earned runs and striking out four. Kelley recorded the final out on the mound for Mitchell.
Against Mankato, Mitchell led 5-4 after five innings but had six errors and yielded six runs over the last two innings. Sutton Thompson had two hits and Borgan, Thompson and Kellan Odell each drove in a run. Parker Mandel pitched five solid innings as the starting pitcher, allowing two hits, one earned run and striking out four. Kelley and Mason Herman each allowed three runs in an inning of relief, with Herman’s runs all unearned.
In Sunday’s game against Sioux Falls, Mason Herman had three hits, while Kelley and Kellan Odell each had two hits, with Odell tallying three RBIs and Kelley posting an RBI and three runs scored. Tyler Sanderson scored twice and Hudson Borgan also drove in a run. On the mound, Sutton Thompson threw 4 2/3 innings for the win, allowing five hits, five runs (one earned) and striking out four. Sanderson recorded the final four outs in relief, allowing two hits.
Mitchell White (6-16) plays at Harrisburg on Tuesday in a 5 p.m. doubleheader.
