MLB's injected crowd noise comes from a video game - NBC Sports Chicago

With no fans in the stands this season, Major League Baseball teams will play crowd noise during games to make up for the hushed atmosphere in ballparks. Where are they getting that crowd noise from?

According to the Associated Press, MLB is taking sounds from its official video game, “MLB The Show.” Stadium sound engineers will have access to 75 effects and fan reactions, which the game’s developer — San Diego Studios, part of Sony Interactive — compiled over the past few baseball seasons.

Without fans, injected crowd noise serves to deliver as close to a real game atmosphere for players as possible. It will be audible for fans watching at home however, both on TV and radio broadcasts.

The Cubs have been experimenting with the sounds during intrasquad action, and outfielder Ian Happ recently told 670 The Score’s Dan Bernstein the games feel more “real” for him with the noise injected.

"I need it as a player, for sure,” Happ told Bernstein on Wednesday. “We played the first two games without it and it was very strange. Just a little too quiet. You could hear everything that was going on.

"As a player, because we're so used to that kind of dull hum of the crowd the entire time, it really helped me just with the way that we communicate with our outfielders. Not being able to scream to them across the field, just some of that stuff, it made it a little bit more normal.

"Stepping in the box to a completely silent stadium was very strange. You need a little bit of a hum. You need something that kind of makes it a little bit more realistic. I guess it makes the field more focused. It's definitely closer and closer to what a real game would feel like."
