Former Bridgeport Sound Tigers forward Ryan Bourque has retired, he said Tuesday.
“I’m excited about the new chapter, new opportunities,” Bourque said. “I’m thankful and grateful for every experience in nine years of pro hockey.”
Bourque said he’s joining Actual Energy of Sandwich, Mass., as a business development manager.
“I’ll be selling retail and commercial energy,” Bourque said. “It’s nice to be at home.”
Bourque, 29, played most of the past three seasons with Bridgeport and was a key two-way forward on all three teams. His 184 games for the Sound Tigers are 24th in the team’s 19-year history.
The Sound Tigers traded Bourque to the Charlotte Checkers at the March 2 AHL trade deadline. He played four games after the deal before the league suspended play because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I thought (retiring) would be a lot tougher,” Bourque said. “Due to the times we’re in, the uncertainty, we don’t know what’s going to happen.”

The New York Rangers drafted Bourque in 2009, and he played his only NHL game for the Rangers in 2014-15. As a rookie in 2012, playing for Hartford (then the Connecticut Whale), he had a goal and an assist against the Sound Tigers in his playoff debut, beginning a three-game Whale sweep. He played most of his first five pro seasons with the Wolf Pack/Whale franchise and served as its captain before the Rangers traded him to Washington.
The younger son of NHL Hall of Famer Ray Bourque, Ryan played with his brother, Chris, in three different places — Hartford, Hershey, and Bridgeport.
