The Rockies got Belted Wednesday night at Coors Field.
San Francisco Giants first baseman Brandon Belt teed off on starter Jon Gray, leading the Giants to a 4-3 victory and halting Colorado’s four-game winning streak. Belt hit 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and three RBIs.
A rare error by Trevor Story and one pitch to Belt cost Gray dearly in the fourth.
Giants shortstop Mike Yastrzemski led off and reached first when Story failed to handle a routine grounder at short. Donovan Solano’s single put two on base for Belt, who hits Gray well. Belt golfed Gray’s slider to right and had just enough on it to clear the out-of-town scoreboard. Belt’s first homer of the season put the Giants ahead, 3-2.
Gray and manager Bud Black both thought Belt’s homer was a deep flyball when he hit it — certainly not a home run — but it had enough oomph to clear the wall.
“I just didn’t get (the slider) quite low enough,” Gray said.
Said Black: “Belt’s got that kind of upper-cut swing. Any ball that’s sort of in, and not down enough, he can lift that ball. But that ball wasn’t hit great, as you guys know. I think it went into the first row. It was a high flyball that went out of the ballpark.”
Catcher Tony Wolters said Gray pitched an overall solid game but said, “That wasn’t Jon’s best slider. It was spinning a little bit.”
Belt took it to Gray again in the sixth as San Francisco stretched its lead to 4-2. Belt ripped a two-out double to right-center and scored on Wilmer Flores’ single. Belt is hitting .416 (10-for-24) with four doubles and two homers in his career vs. Gray.
Gray, who saw his ERA inch up from 2.61 to 3.31, remains winless this season. He allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits over six innings. Gray whiffed only two but didn’t walk a batter.
Logan Webb made his first career start against the Rockies and kept them off-balance with a good changeup and solid fastball command. He pitched five innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits with no walks and four strikeouts.
“It was the first time we have seen this fella and we just couldn’t quite solve him,” Black said.
Giants nemesis Nolan Arenado smacked a first-pitch homer off lefty Tony Watson to lead off the seventh, cutting the lead to 4-3, but the Rockies could not mount a rally in the eighth or ninth.
Arenado, who’s hit a homer in three consecutive games, has 31 career home runs against San Francisco, two more than Todd Helton for the most by a Colorado player vs. the Giants. Plus, Arenado’s home run gave him his ninth career home run streak of three or more games, including his second against the Giants. He homered in four straight games against them from June 28-Sept. 5, 2015.
Colorado got out of the gate quickly, with leadoff hitter David Dahl reaching on an error by Solano at third and advancing on a wild pitch by Giants starter Logan Webb. Dahl trotted home on a Charlie Blackmon’s RBI single that extended his hitting streak to nine games.
Colorado’s lead grew to 2-0 in third with some basic team offense. Sam Hilliard singled, stole second, moved to third on Tony Wolters’ groundout and scored on Dahl’s sacrifice fly.
The Rockies and Giants wrap up their four-game series Thursday afternoon at Coors.
