Netflix's intro sound was almost the sound of a screaming goat. The now-iconic 'ta-dum' sound that viewers are so used to hearing every time they start up a Netflix original series or movie on the streaming service was created in 2015. But Netflix nearly went in a very different direction with their launch sound.
On the 100th episode of the TED-affiliated podcast Twenty Thousand Hertz, which focuses solely on interesting sounds, Netflix's VP of Product Todd Yellin and Oscar-winning sound editor Lon Bender revealed how the Netflix audio logo was created and that at one point there was an attempt to recreate the MGM lion's roar with a goat sound. "I liked the sound of a goat," said Yellin. "It was funny and it was quirky and it was our version of Leo the Lion." Yellin went on to explain the process of coming up with the right sound, saying they wanted it to make viewers think, "Wow, I'm about to get a treat."
Yellin explained that the goat sound was one of 20-30 different sound effects that he and Netflix Brand Design Lead Tanya Kumar had to choose from. One of the other choices was the 'ta-dum' sound, which Bender revealed to be the sound of his wedding ring knocking against a wood cabinet in his bedroom. He added an electric guitar phrase that has been reversed and a slowed anvil sound to create 'The Blossom' sound.
Yellin said the 'ta-dum' was in the top three, along with the goat and a bubbly, ocean sound. Yellin went on to say that he played the sounds for his daughter one day after work and how her choice among the options became the winner. The 'ta-dum' sound was chosen and went onto become the sound logo for the streaming giant. While Netflix likely would have turned into a success regardless of the start-up sound, listening to a bleating goat likely would have gotten old really fast.
