New Mustang Mach-E has special sounds: What you'll hear - Detroit Free Press

While Lincoln selected sounds created by Detroit Symphony musicians for its luxury Aviator SUV, Ford Motor Co. has gone in a totally different direction for the all-electric Mustang Mach-E.

The company revealed Friday the SUV made in Cuautitlán, Mexico that's scheduled to debut later this year will have a unique and "thumping" new sound to accompany driver experience.

Ford said its sound designers were "inspired by classic '80s sci-fi cinema" and crafted "electronic oscillations that emanate in and outside of the Mustang Mach-E while the vehicle is in motion."

The vehicle will have chime sounds when in reverse and sound tailored to match each drive mode, plus exterior sound used for pedestrian awareness, Ford said.

Here's what Ford calls the new sound elements:

  • Drive 0mph
  • Drive 20mph
  • Reverse
  • Driver Seat Whisper
  • Driver Seat Unbridled
  • Rear Seat Engage
  • Rear Seat Unbridled
  • Unbridled Interior Full Pedal

The "whisper" mode is "seamless, calm and quiet, designed to give the feeling of gliding and coasting," Ford said. "No sound enhancement is present while in whisper mode."

The "unbridled" mode is an "exhilarating drive experience that pays homage to the legacy of Mustang sound."

Sound is active whenever the vehicle is not in park and increases in volume and pitch until 20 mph, after which it quickly fades. Sound can be muted, confirmed Ford spokeswoman Emma Berg.

Mustang original

In partnership with the project, Ford commissioned Detroit electronic music artist and DJ Matthew Dear, a founding member of the Ghostly International music label. He used "synth-heavy sounds" to create "New Breed," what Ford calls "a hypnotic electronic arrangement that’s distinctly Mustang Mach-E."

“The idea of remixing the sounds from the Mustang Mach-E was immediately interesting because I’ve always considered myself to be a ‘sound tinkerer,’ ” Dear said in remarks released by Ford.

“But after I got to actually hear and experience the digital propulsion sounds that Ford created, I was sold on the project," Dear said. "The sounds are cooler than I thought they’d be — cinematic and sci-fi — and all the noises the car makes have a sense of modern musicality. Creating 'New Breed' was a new experience and I think the song — like the car — takes its passengers on a voyage.”

This song creates a new Mustang sound, Ford said.
