Projector, sound improvements made at Huntington's Keith-Albee Performing Arts Center - West Virginia MetroNews

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — The historic Keith-Albee Performing Arts Center in Huntington now has improved projector and cinema surround sound systems, recent equipment upgrades that were funded, in part, with an anonymous gift to the Marshall Artists Series.

Additional funding came from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the West Virginia Humanities Council drawing on money from the federal CARES Act, Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security.

Dr. Bob Plymale (D-Wayne, 05)

“It’s just an upgrade to be able to look in these COVID-19 situations where we could still be providing a venue for people to come to with social distancing,” said state Senator Bob Plymale (D-Wayne, 05), chair of the Keith-Albee Performing Arts Center, of the work.

For decades, art house, foreign language films and others have been part of the offerings from the Marshall Artists Series at the Keith-Albee.

With better pictures and sound, plans called for expanded film showings, including those with educational components linked to Marshall University and Cabell County and surrounding counties as a whole.

“We do a lot of children’s events and, when we bring children into that theater, it’s one of those awe moments,” Plymale told MetroNews.

Going forward, “We’re trying to make sure that we will have a safe venue.”

This year’s Fall International Film Festival was scheduled for October.

Larger-scale restoration work continued at the Keith-Albee Performing Arts Center which is included on the National Register of Historic Places. It first opened in 1928 as a vaudeville theater and later became a movie theater.

During the pandemic closure, work has included carpet replacement in the upstairs balcony.
