Going outside in metro Phoenix currently feels something like standing on the surface of the sun. On Thursday, a high of 118 degrees broke a daily record set in 1934.
But despite the record-breaking heat, one Tempe brewery is here to declare that summer 2020 is officially over.
On Monday, Aug. 3, Four Peaks Brewing Company will release this year's first batch of its seasonal autumn beer Pumpkin Porter.
In its earliest release ever — one that might even beat the grocery store Halloween displays — Pumpkin Porter will be available at the Tempe brew pub along with grocery stores and bottle shops throughout Arizona.
"By any measure, summer 2020 has sucked," Four Peaks co-founder and head brewer Andy Ingram said in a news release. "So we've decided we're just going to skip the rest of it and go right into fall."
Why so soon? Because 'everyone's over 2020'
Fall flavors, spiced lattes and pumpkin beers are getting released earlier and earlier every year due to a phenomenon known as seasonal creep.
But whereas the push for ever-earlier releases is usually driven by grocery stores and consumer demand, this year — in so many ways — is different.
During the coronavirus pandemic, bars and restaurants around the country have been hit hard. For many, going to a local brewery for a beer with friends like a distant memory.
Four Peaks has downsized by one location during the pandemic, after its pub in Scottsdale's temporary closure turned permanent. After 16 years of business, the Four Peaks pub in Scottsdale is now permanently closed, a spokesperson for the company confirmed to The Arizona Republic in May.
So, to make a rough couple of months just a little bit better, the team at Four Peaks decided to release the flavors of fall.
"At this point, everyone's over 2020. We just want the year to end," Ingram said in the release. "We may still have a few months to go, but at least summer's over now that Pumpkin Porter's out."
Here's where you can find Pumpkin Porter bottles and kegs
Bottles of Pumpkin Porter will be available at grocery stores and bottle shops around Arizona starting on Aug. 3. The beer will hit shelves in Nevada and New Mexico a few days later.
To celebrate the fall beer release, Four Peaks also has a treat for Pumpkin Porter superfans.
A limited number of kegs will be for sale at the Four Peaks brewpub in Tempe on Aug. 3, available for preorder at fourpeaksgrub.com.
For those who are ready to dine in at the pub, expect to see Pumpkin Porter on tap starting Friday, Aug. 7, accompanied by discounts and dishes cooked with Pumpkin Porter as well.
