Yacht Rock Revue have made an album somewhere between Ambrosia’s “One Eighty,” the Flaming Lips’ “The Soft Bulletin” and Cut Copy’s “In Ghost Colours.” The band has called this glorious and unholy triangulation of styles and sounds “Hot Dads in Tight Jeans.”
If it seems impossible that a cover band such as Yacht Rock Revue could create joyous, silly and smart original rock ’n’ roll, then pull a stool up to the tiki bar, order a pina colada and let YRR captain Nicholas Niespodziani tell you a tale.
“We talked to our producer, Ben Allen, who actually produced a couple of Cut Copy records, about not wanting to ignore the vibe that got us this far,” singer Niespodziani said ahead of YRR’s show at the Yarmouth Drive-In on Aug. 28.
The Atlanta tribute to ’70s AM Gold and ’80s Top 40 has sold out international clubs and cruises for years. But Niespodziani wanted YRR to create their own music; as a songwriter, he didn’t feel complete only doing covers of Steely Dan, Michael McDonald and, yes, Ambrosia. And yet, that music couldn’t just be rewrites of yacht rock staples.
“I’d rather listen to Hall & Oates, than to a band blatantly imitating Hall & Oates,” he said. “I feel like with the album, we stayed true to ourselves but we also stayed true to the style of music we have been performing. I think that’s one of the reasons our fans embraced it.”
YRR’s fans are hardcore. They wear the captain hats. They drink booze blended with fruit. But they have also been happy to let YRR drop originals between “Lido Shuffle” and “Rich Girl” — note: nearly every track on “Hot Dads in Tight Jeans” has more spins on Spotify than the band’s (recorded in Boston) live album. Smartly, Niespodziani has made intentional choices of where and when to show off their own tunes.
“We had just started to experiment with adding new songs ‘Step’ and ‘Bad Tequila’ into the set when the tour ended,” Niespodziani said, referring to the coronavirus shutting down their road show. “I shouldn’t have underestimated our fans because when we started the tour in California and played ‘Step’ or ‘Bad Tequila,’ we would get some of the biggest applause of the night. They were buying records, requesting songs, and even during the pandemic, during my Thursday night solo acoustic livestream, ‘Bad Tequila’ is definitely the most requested song.”
Without a way to safely rehearse, it will be a while until YRR adds more songs from “Hot Dads in Tight Jeans” to the set. But it will happen. Well, at least it should happen. If YRR is brave enough to cram Eddie Rabbit, Steely Dan and the Commodores together, the band can find a slot for the album’s freaky, funky, P-Funk-partying-with-Daft-Punk closing track “My Favorite Stardust.”
