CLEVELAND, Ohio — Law enforcement arrested four people Tuesday outside the presidential debate in Cleveland, according to police.
City officials provided no other information about the arrests, including where the circumstances surrounding the arrests. A news conference is scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday, the city said.
“The event concluded with no major incidents as demonstrations and attendees remained mostly lawful and peaceful,” the city’s statement says.
Two people were taken into custody about 4:20 p.m. a few blocks from Samson Pavilion on the Cleveland Clinic’s main campus, hours before the debate began, according to Voice of America reporter Carolyn Presutti, who witnessed the incident.
Presutti said police handcuffed two men wearing ski masks, goggles and backpacks after they walked around a barrier set up along President Donald Trump’s motorcade. The motorcade drove by less than one minute after the arrests, Presutti said.
Protests, including one that drew several hundred in University Circle, were peaceful. A law enforcement officer flipped off protesters marching near East Boulevard and Hazel Drive.
The number of arrests Tuesday marked a significant departure from the May 30 demonstrations in downtown Cleveland, part of a series of national protests over the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police.
The spring demonstration saw more than 100 people arrested after rioting and looting took place as the sun went down on a largely peaceful day that saw more than 2,000 people protest in downtown Cleveland.
