The North Country is rich in musical talent but with venues closed and concerts virtual until the pandemic is over, it’s even harder for musicians to get their work to an audience. So earlier this summer NCPR began featuring instrumental music of regional artists during our news programs. Tim Ellifritz, owner/operator of Ten Elephants Studios in Johnsburg, sent in some tracks that we’ve been using.
Ellifritz left a job he'd had for thirty years last fall. He started giving guitar lessons, playing a lot of live gigs and opened his own recording studio. Things were going great, starting to pick up speed. He was even getting ready to record his own album. And then March came.
"Everything went flat," says Ellifritz, "what can I do? I can record all this stuff that I wanted to finish, that I set out five years ago to do, it takes a long time."

And now Ellifritz had the time. With no live shows, no guitar lessons, and no one coming in to record. he could dedicate himself to finishing his album.
Ellifritz noticed that people were starting to do livestreams online so he populated his studio with HD cameras. The isolation rooms normally used to keep noisy guitar amps and drumkits separate could now be used in a different way.
"We turned that into isolation rooms for people," adds Ellifritz, so now I have four isolation rooms in my basement, each with a camera."

He says that this way no one really has to come into his house, he's upstairs at the console while his customers are in the basement doing their presentations or playing their instruments. He's done some recordings that way and some livestreams as well. Ellifritz gets a charge out of recording people, he says.
"To sit here and get everything just right and have them do a good performance and capture that, it's a blast, I love it, " Ellifritz adds, "It's capital F-U-N."
