Angels’ GM search includes at least four interviews so far - OCRegister

As the offseason begins to gear up, the first four candidates for the Angels’ vacant general manager position have emerged.

Oakland A’s assistant general manager Billy Owens, San Diego Padres special assistant Logan White and Arizona Diamondbacks assistant general managers Jared Porter and Ariel Sawdaye have all interviewed for the job, a source confirmed on Thursday night.

It is not clear how many other candidates have interviewed, or how many they have left to interview.

The Angels have been looking for a GM since Billy Eppler was fired on the final day of the regular season. They have kept details of the search under wraps, with no names confirmed until these four.

Owens is one of the most well-respected talent evaluators in the game, having spent 19 years in the A’s front office, where he has been one of the point men in amateur scouting and acquisitions from other organizations.

White spent 13 years in various capacities as one of the Dodgers’ top talent evaluators before joining the Padres in 2014.

Porter has spent the last four years as an assistant to Arizona GM Mike Hazen. He worked in the front office of the Chicago Cubs when they won the World Series in 2016 – and Joe Maddon was the Cubs’ manager – and he was a part of the Boston Red Sox front office when they won titles in 2004, 2007 and 2013.

Sawdaye has also been an assistant in Arizona for the past four years, after spending 15 years with the Red Sox.

Dave Dombrowski, who was the Red Sox GM when they won the World Series in 2018, was widely reported to be a top candidate for the Angels, even before Eppler was fired. At this point, it’s unclear if Dombrowski has interviewed for the job.

The Angels are looking for a new GM after five consecutive losing seasons, a stretch that prompted president John Carpino to say that they were open to changing anything that could help the franchise win again.

Carpino said there was no rush to make a hire and that the process could take until Thanksgiving.

The first key decision for the Angels is due on Sunday, when they must decide whether to offer shortstop Andrelton Simmons a qualifying offer. Immediately after that deadline passes at 2 p.m. PT, teams are free to negotiate with free agents from other teams.
