COLUMBUS, Neb. (KOLN) —
Four people died in a house fire over the weekend in eastern Nebraska, fire officials in Columbus said.
Those four people, all from a blended family, died of smoke inhalation.
The fire broke out Saturday morning in a house in the heart of Columbus, which is about 70 miles west of Omaha.
The victims, ranging in age from four months old, to 28.
According to obituaries from the Gass Haney Funeral Home in Platte County, 27-year-old Lars Barcel and his girlfriend 28-year-old Janelle Miller were both killed. Also dying in the fire, their 4-month-old son Lars Jr. and Janelle’s daughter Natasha Lambrecht.
On Monday, 10/11 NOW spoke with the father of the 6-year-old girl named Natasha.
“She was always full of life, she had an infectious laugh,” said Nic Lambrecht.
He and his fiance have pictures showing the day Natasha came home from the hospital. They tell 10/11 NOW, she was an outgoing girl who loved the color purple.
“Her smile, it was contagious, her laugh, as annoying as it was, it is stuck in your head. You can’t forget it,” said Natasha’s stepmother, Amy Ostrander.
The State Fire Marshal says the blaze was started by a stray ember from a fireplace.
Investigators say the home had smoke detectors but they didn’t have working batteries.
“We’re taking it one breath at a time honestly, one hour at a time... It comes in waves.. right now I think is a good moment, probably an hour ago it wasn’t,” said Lambrecht and Ostrander.
The couple says the 6-year-old will always be remembered for her kindness to others and her love of her siblings.
“She will be with us always, even if it is not physically,” said Ostrander.
