INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Emergency crews were called to the scene of a serious crash involving four vehicles on southbound I-65, near the Franklin exit, just before noon on Saturday. Upon arrival, they found an unresponsive adult female. Franklin Fire Department personnel provided life-saving efforts, but Christine Lykins, 55, of Muncie was pronounced deceased. Four other people involved in the crash were transported to area hospitals.
The preliminary investigation conducted by the Indiana State Police Crash Reconstruction team determined that traffic was backed up due to road construction. A car rear-ended a stopped pickup truck which subsequently rear-ended an SUV, which bumped a tractor-trailer.
Two passengers in the car were ejected through the windshield. Authorities think neither was wearing a seat belt. One died at the scene and the other was seriously injured and taken to an area hospital.
The drivers of the pickup and SUV were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The fourth vehicle, a semi, left the scene and investigators are following leads to try and locate it.
The southbound lanes of I-65 were closed for over two hours for crash investigation and clean-up.
