
The Blue Devil sophomores played 36 holes Saturday to open action and combined to collect 18 birdies between them.
Shepherd, who is coming off winning the Golfweek Hoosier Amateur last weekend, currently sits in third place and only three shots off the lead with a five-under-par, 139, after carding rounds of 69 and 70. Furtney is in fourth with a three-under-par, 141, with rounds of 71 and 70.
A product of Greenwood, Ind., Shepherd opened her day with a one-over-par, 37, over her first nine holes, but closed strong with a four-under-par, 32, to finish round one with a three-under-par, 69. Shepherd was two-under-par over the first nine holes of the second round with birdies on No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6. She closed with an even-par, 36, on the back nine to finish with a two-under, 70.
Furtney turned in solid finishes to both of her rounds Saturday. After opening her first round with two birdies over her first three holes, Furtney found herself at one-over-par through 11 holes. Furtney, who hails from St. Charles, Ill., rolled in birdies on No. 13 and No. 18 to finish with a one-under, 71.
In the second round, Furtney was two-over-par through six holes, but caught fire collecting birdies on No. 8, No. 14, No. 16 and No. 18 to finish with a two-under-par, 70.
Leading the tournament is Lauren Hartlage with an eight-under-par, 136.
The Duke duo will close the tournament Sunday with 18 holes.
