LAWRENCE, Kan. – A few tweaks to the doubles pairings at the start of day two of the Kansas Invitational opened up more opportunities for the Kansas State women's tennis team, as three of the duos in the Wildcats' lineup produced wins in Saturday's morning (October 3) session at the Jayhawk Tennis Center.
K-State witnessed a few new pairs in doubles competition, which included senior Lilla Barzo and junior Anna Turco, juniors Rosanna Maffei and Ioana Gheorghita and freshman Manami Ukita and senior Margot Decker.
The duo of Barzo and Turco clinched victories over Kansas tandems of Tiffany Lagarde and Vasiliki Karvouni (6-3) and Malkia Ngounoue and Sonia Smagina (6-2) to ignite the Wildcats to four total victories before singles play started.
"I liked our performance better in doubles this morning," said head coach Jordan Smith. "We switched up our teams and created new pairings today. We were pleased to see how well the new pairs did today and we tried to control the paces in all the matches. A couple of our teams picked up great wins today."
Juniors Maria Linares and Karine-Marion Job continued their torrid play at the Jayhawk Tennis Center with a nice 6-4 set win against Iowa State's Maty Cancini and Christen Hsieh.
"KJ (Karine-Marion Job) and Maria (Linares) continued their great momentum from yesterday," said Smith.
Maffei and Gheorghita tacked on the final victory in the doubles portion, as the two took down Sonia Smagina and Julia Deming of Kansas with a set score of 6-3.
The Wildcats took a similar approach to singles play and it resulted in another impressive outing from Ukita, as she grabbed two wins against Iowa State's Chie Kezuka (6-2, 6-4) and Ellie Murphy (6-2, 6-3). Ukita's win total for the weekend has now extended to three victories with her performances today.
Following Ukita's efforts on the courts, Barzo sealed a win over Christen Hsieh of Iowa State (6-3, 6-2) while Gheorghita earned a two-set victory over Kansas' Julia Deming (6-4, 6-1). Maffei delivered a quality outing against the Jayhawk's Carmen Roxana Manu, as she scored an impressive two-set win, 7-5, 6-2.
The five victories in Saturday's singles slate increases the Wildcats' win total to 11 at the Kansas Invitational.
"The team put together another great performance in singles today," said Smith. "They were placed in more difficult situations today and they didn't shy away from the challenge."
Coming off a solid victory in singles play for the Friday session, Linares took her opponent head on but slipped up just short, as Malkia Ngounoue of Kansas claimed the victory in two sets, 6-2, 6-0. Decker and Turco let off the gas late in their matches, which resulted in losses in the afternoon portion. Turco fell to KU's Tiffany Lagarde in a three-set outing, 3-6, 6-2, 3-6, while Decker attempted to climb back into her match with Iowa State's Maty Cancini, only to fall in two sets with a score line of 1-6, 0-6.
Job battled back and forth with Kansas' Sonia Smagina but could not hold off the Jayhawk, as she fell in the third set of the match with score of 3-6, 6-1, 5-7.
The Wildcats will wrap up the Kansas Invitational on Sunday with doubles play beginning at 10 a.m. CT. Singles competition will follow the conclusion of doubles play.
"We're getting tougher and we are getting wins to go along with it. I'm looking forward to seeing how well we finish tomorrow," said Smith.
