Safety Sound, 20 miles east of Nome, supports a vivid ecosystem. Juvenile salmon rear in the estuary, marine mammals seek refuge in the calm waters during fall storms, thick beds of eelgrass support bird and aquatic life, and migratory birds, including several endangered species, rest and nest in the area, recovering from one long migration while preparing for the next.
The presence of varied animal life also brings humans — to subsist off these rich resources, to recreate, and birdwatchers, who flock to Nome from across the world for a chance to see unique birds. Safety Sound is an estuary, but it is also the very thing it claims to be in name — a sanctuary, a safe place.
One thing that does not belong in Safety Sound is mining. IPOP has spent several years assaulting state and federal agencies with incomplete, inaccurate and dishonest mining applications for this area. Nome has a long history of mining, but a petition earlier this year garnered more than 1,000 signatures opposing mining in this specific location, citing essential fish, bird, and marine mammal habitat and invaluable subsistence opportunities. IPOP needs to take its halfhearted mining plans elsewhere.
