Wildcats Record Four Wins in Singles Play in Final Outing at OSU Fall Series Championship - K-StateSports.com

STILLWATER, Okla. –  The Kansas State women's tennis team showed up on the final day of the OSU Fall Series Championship, which resulted in four singles wins at the Greenwood Tennis Center on Sunday (November 8) afternoon.

"Today was our best day of being able to take control early in singles," said head coach Jordan Smith. "The team saw how much easier it is to create opportunities instead of hoping it comes to them. Because of that change, we were able to grab four out of six wins and nearly a fifth by Rosy (Rosanna Maffei)."

Competing one last time against conference foes before dual match play begins in the spring, the Wildcats poured in multiple wins in the consolation portion of the singles bracket to close out the tournament.

A trio of juniors paved the way for K-State in the afternoon session at the Greenwood Tennis Courts, as Ioana Gheorghita, Maria Linares and Anna Turco all scored nice victories for the Wildcats in singles play.

Jump starting K-State was Linares in her matchup with Texas Tech's Nell Miller, who posted an efficient 6-4, 6-3 win over the Red Raider.

Following Linares in the Flight Three bracket was Gheorhgita, who pounced on Camryn Stepp of Texas Tech with a 6-2, 6-4 victory.

Turco needed only two sets to knock off Iowa State's Chie Kezuka, as the Mondovi, Italy, native recorded a 6-3, 6-4 win in the Flight Two bracket.

Compiling the fourth singles' victory of the day for the Wildcats came from freshman Manami Ukita, as she once again powered past her opponent in individual play. Ukita used a 6-3, 6-2 score line over the Red Raiders' Kailey Evans to clinch the victory.

The Saitama, Japan, native ends her first fall season as a Wildcat with a 9-2 mark in singles play.

"The biggest takeaway from us is that we know we're good and talented," Smith stated. "However, it takes more than that to win consistently. As a group, we all have to be more disciplined at maintaining our standards. Having similar goals to achieve daily, weekly or monthly will help."

In the morning session of day three, doubles' action took place, and the pairing of Linares and partner Karine-Marion Job were in the mix of capturing the Doubles Consolation Championship crown. The duo went head-to-head with Baylor's Jessica Hinojosa and Livia Kraus in a winner-take-all set. However, the No. 1 pairing could not outlast the fire power of the Bears' duo and fell at a score of 4-6.

Another doubles' pairing fought hard in the last outing at the Greenwood Tennis Center for K-State, as Gheorghita and Turco both let up an early lead to Kansas' Malkia Ngounoue and Julia Deming to eventually drop the set at 1-6.

Job and junior teammate Rosanna Maffei both finished out the singles lineup for K-State at the OSU Fall Series Championship. Maffei pushed Mel Krywoj of Baylor to a third set in her matchup but fell to the Bear with a box score of 4-6, 6-2, 8-10. Job, who resides out of Lyon, France, competed against Mercedes Aristegui of TCU in the afternoon. Aristegui handled Job in her match, however, and tallied the second loss of singles play for K-State.

Through three fall tournaments, the Wildcats have now turned in 37 total wins in singles' competition, which exceeds the Fall 2019 season by one victory (36).

K-State has now completed its 2020 Fall season and will turn its focus to the 2021 Spring campaign.

"Our next competition is in less than two months," said Smith. "The best thing we can do to prepare is to continue to make our remaining practices competitive and continue taking care of our bodies during the holiday break."
