Longmont will be starting the removal of four non-residential buildings in an area northeast of East County Line Road between East Ninth Avenue and Sunshine Avenue on Monday as part of its site work on the Spring Gulch No. 2 Greenway Project, officials announced Thursday.
Removal of the four buildings on city-owned property is intended to enhance safety and aesthetics for the trailhead being constructed as part of the Spring Gulch No. 2 Greenway Project, the city said in a news release.
More information about the overall project is available on the Spring Gulch No. 2 Greenway Project web page, tinyurl.com/yy4kjv9t.
The overall Spring Gulch No. 2 Drainage and Trail Improvement Project addresses drainage, open space and transportation issues by designing and constructing a greenway trail connection and drainage improvements along the Spring Gulch No. 2 drainage in the northeast part of Longmont.
City staff said on the project’s website that once all its phases are complete, the greenway will provide a north-south greenway trail connection running from Ute Creek Golf Course southeast to Union Reservoir, continuing on to Sandstone Ranch Nature Area and then connecting with the St. Vrain Greenway.
Phase 1 of the project was constructed in 2013 and is complete. It included construction of a sidewalk along the north side of Colo. 119 (SH-119) extending from its intersection with Third Avenue east to Spring Gulch No. 2. Box culverts for the Spring Gulch No. 2 drainage and a pedestrian underpass were also constructed under Colo. 119, with the underpass and culvert system improving drainage to safely pass 100-year storm flows under the highway and create a grade-separated pedestrian crossing.
Construction of Phase 2 began in September 2019 and is expected to be completed next year. It includes construction of greenway trail and drainage improvements from Stephen Day Park southeast to the Union Reservoir Nature Area at Weld County Road 26. Work includes installing a 10-foot wide concrete greenway with a 3-foot wide crusher fine trail, a box culvert system consisting of a pedestrian underpass and two drainage culverts running under East County Line Road, and relocating the Lower Oligarchy Ditch.
The cost for Phase 2 of the Spring Gulch No. 2 Greenway project is expected to be about $7.2 million, funded primarily through the city’s open space fund and a variety of other city funds, according to the project’s web page. Golden-based Edge Contracting Inc. was hired by the city to complete Phase 2 of the project.
Phase 3 of the project, which is to connect greenway trail segments between Union Reservoir and Colo. 119, is to include drainage improvements through this area and installation of a pedestrian underpass under the Great Western Railroad tracks. Construction of Phase 3 is expected to begin next year.
