Four people charged with stealing more than $170k in unemployment benefits - masslive.com

Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey announced charges against four Massachusetts residents who are alleged to have stolen more than $170,000 in unemployment benefits. The have been charged as a result of an investigation by the Department of Unemployment Assistance, according to the AG’s office.

On Friday, William Corkery, Marcelle Prou, Susan Richardson and Nancy Webby are alleged to have collected more than $170,000 in combined unemployment benefits while continuing to work, according to a statement from the AG’s office.

The Department of Unemployment Assistance’s Program Integrity Department focuses on the prevention, detection and the investigation of those who defraud or attempt to defraud the unemployment insurance program.

Braintree native, 55-year-old Corkery, 44-year-old Prou, of New Bedford and 57-year-old Richardson of Brockton are alleged to have worked and then underreported their wages while claiming unemployment from 2014 to 2017.

Corkery has been charged with six counts of unemployment fraud after collecting over $35,000 in benefits and three counts of Larceny. Prou and Richardson have been charged with eight counts of unemployment fraud and four counts of larceny over $250.

Prou is alleged to have taken over $60,000 and Richardson over $35,000 over the four years, according to the AG’s office.

Berlin native, 56-year-old Webby has been charged with eight counts of unemployment fraud and four counts of larceny from $250 to $1,200. She is alleged to have claimed over-collected over $40,000 in unemployment benefits from 2015 through 2018.

All four will be arraigned in Suffolk Superior Court at a date that has yet to be announced.
