FCC add four players in MLS SuperDraft - FC Cincinnati

CINCINNATI – FC Cincinnati made four selections in the 2021 MLS SuperDraft, highlighted by the selection of Wake Forest forward Calvin Harris with the second overall pick, one of five Generation adidas signings available to be drafted.

The Orange and Blue entered the day with four total selections. FC Cincinnati acquired an additional second-round selection from Columbus Crew SC in exchange for midfielder Fatai Alashe on Aug. 17, 2020.

MLS SuperDraft Summary:

·       Selected forward Calvin Harris from Wake Forest with the No. 2 pick

·       Selected defender Avionne Flanagan from South Florida with the No. 29 pick

·       Selected midfielder Jonas Fjeldberg from Dayton with the No. 54 pick

·       Selected forward Matthew Vowinkel from Hofstra with the No. 56 pick

With the second overall pick in the 2021 MLS SuperDraft, FC Cincinnati selected forward Calvin Harris. Harris, a Generation adidas signing, played two seasons at Wake Forest (2019-20), making 32 appearances and 25 starts. The Middlesbrough, England, native scored 10 goals and added five assists during his collegiate career with the Demon Deacons. The forward was named to the ACC All-Freshman Team after the 2019 season.

Prior to joining Wake Forest University, Harris made six appearances, scoring two goals, in the 2018-19 New Zealand Premiership season with the Wellington Phoenix reserves.

Defender Avionne Flanagan played three seasons at South Florida (2017-19), where he made 48 appearances, including 41 starts, scoring four goals and adding seven assists. The defender was named to the AAC All-Conference First Team in 2019 following his junior campaign.

Midfielder Jonas Fjeldberg played three seasons at the University of Dayton (2017-19). The Jessheim, Norway, native made 52 appearances, including 40 starts, scoring 17 goals and adding 17 assists. Fjeldberg led the Flyers in goals scored during his sophomore and junior campaign. The midfielder was named Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year and to Atlantic 10 in his junior season.

Forward Matthew Vowinkel played three seasons at Hofstra (2017-19), where he made a combined 57 appearances, including 42 starts, scoring 23 goals and adding two assists. Following his breakout junior campaign where he led the Pride with 13 goals, Vowinkel was named the CAA All-Conference First Team and the United Soccer Coaches All-Region selection.
