It’s been two weeks since the Stars began training camp in Frisco, and in an ordinary world (as ordinary as it can be now), Dallas would be in Tampa for a Cup Final rematch with the Lightning on Sunday night.
Instead, the Stars are slowly recovering from a COVID-19 outbreak that affected 17 players and pushed back their season until Jan. 22, when Dallas will host Nashville at American Airlines Center. The NHL rescheduled the Stars’ first four games, and Dallas will face a condensed 56-game schedule in the newfangled Central Division.
In the last fortnight, there have been plenty of odds and ends, with potential impacts on the regular season, so let’s empty the camp notebook.
Four players returned to practice Sunday morning, with Justin Dowling joining Miro Heiskanen, Jamie Oleksiak and Taylor Fedun on the ice. Blake Comeau missed practice, and head coach Rick Bowness said it was for medical reasons, but did not elaborate.
Bowness said Mark Pysyk, Julius Honka and Rhett Gardner should return to the ice Monday, but will not participate in the team’s three-period, 60-minute scrimmage. Instead, they will skate on their own both Monday and Tuesday as they ease their way back.
“When you’re off for a while and you get back out there, the legs are heavy, you’re not breathing right,” Bowness said. “Everything just feels off. But as practice goes on and you get a couple of days out there, your wind does come back. Your timing comes back. Your legs don’t feel as heavy. It’s just going to take time.
“You take a week off the ice going into camp, it affects you and you need time. That’s why we’re having hard skates at the end of practice to help them get their wind back and help them get their legs back underneath them.”
Once Pysyk, Honka and Gardner return, Comeau would be the only player missing from the Stars lineup.
