EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) - After leaving the state Capitol last April, the state legislature got back in session on Monday. Leadership has been busy naming members to various committees for the new session. According to a rundown prepared by the Ag Connection, the Assembly Agriculture Committee will again be chaired by Gary Tauchen, a farmer from Bonduel. The vice-chair will be Loren Oldenburg of Viroqua. Other Republicans on the committee from our area include Nancy Vander Meer of Tomah, Trig Pronschinske of Mondovi and Clint Moses of Menomonie. The closest Democrat on the ag committee is Katrina Shankland from Stevens Point.
Julia Nunes of the Chippewa Falls/Tilden area will have the distinction of serving longer as Alice in Dairyland than any other young women ever. That’s because the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection has cancelled this year’s Alice Finals because of the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. Her reign as our 74th Alice, will now last until July 15th, 2022. This year’s finals were scheduled for May in Walworth County with next year’s 75th finals to be held in Dane County. Officials also announced that this year’s Fairest of the Fairs, Cayley VandeBerg of Rosendale will also serve an extra year in that position. Normally a new Fairest is selected in January at the Fairs Association annual convention.
Some Wisconsin farm Bureau members will soon be helping the American Farm Bureau Federation formulate policies for the future. Four members from the state have been added to Farm Bureau Issue Advisory Committees beginning in February. Peter Kimball of Baldwin will serve a two year term on the Water committee. That committee deals with Clean Water Act issues, water storage programs, Army Corps of Engineers efforts as well as flood control. Don Radtke of Merril will continue to serve on the Agricultural Labor committee. That group deals with issues like guest worker programs, OSHA regulations, employment taxes and health care. A third member from Wisconsin who will serve on a national Farm Bureau Committee is Robert Nigh of Viroqua. Nigh will serve another 2 years on the Animal Care Committee. That team looks at overall animal care and health standards, antibiotic use and livestock processing issues. Also serving nationally will be Dave Daniels of Union Grove who is on the Farm Policy Committee.
