Texas fires football coach Tom Herman after four seasons - Houston Chronicle

AUSTIN — Tom Herman is out as head coach at Texas after four seasons, the school announced Saturday morning. in a statement.

Herman finishes his career at Texas with a 32-18 record (22-14 Big 12), a 4-0 record in bowl games and an 0-1 record in the Big 12 championship.

Steve Sarkisian, currently the offensive coordinator at Alabama and a former head coach at USC and Washington, is expected to be named as Herman's  replacement, Chip Brown of Horns247 reported.

“With our football season coming to a close, our vice president and athletics director, Chris Del Conte, has evaluated the UT program’s strengths and weaknesses and where the program is relative to our goals,” the University of Texas said in a statement. “While we have made measured progress during the past several years under Tom Herman’s leadership, Chris has recommended to the university president, Jay Hartzell, that UT make a coaching change to get us on track to achieving our ambitious goals.

“President Hartzell and the chair of our Board of Regents, Kevin Eltife, concur with this recommendation and have approved the change. We thank Coach Herman for his service and dedication to our student-athletes, our program and our university.”

Del Conte later issued his own statement on Twitter.

“Decisions like this are very, very difficult and certainly not something I take lightly,” he said. “As I’ve said before, my philosophy is to wait until the end of the season to look at all of the factors in evaluating any of our programs. After much deliberation ad a great deal of thought, as I looked back at the totality of where our football program is and in discussing its future, it became apparent that it was in the  best interest of The University of Texas to move in a different direction. I’m grateful for all Coach Herman has done and  the hard work and dedication he and his staff have put in on behalf of our program and student-athletes. I thank him for all of his efforts and his service to our institution, and I wish him the best in the future.”

The university will owe Herman $15 million due to his guaranteed contract, which had three years remaining when he was terminated. Buying out the remainder of the staff, seven of whom were hired in the past year, could shoot the total cost past $25 million if the incoming head coach elects to clean house and recruit his own staff, as it typically the case.

No. 20 Texas (7-3, 5-3 Big 12) capped its 2020 season with a 55-23 in over Colorado in the Alamo Bowl, the program’s fourth straight bowl win under Herman. But that wasn’t enough to erase the impatience university leadership, prominent boosters and vocal fans felt in the seasons following Herman’s peak, a second-year Sugar Bowl win over No. 5 Georgia on New Year’s Day 2019.

Following a failed attempt to hire Fox Sports analyst and former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer, Del Conte released a lukewarm statement on December 12 claiming the school supported Herman and that he would coach the team in 2021. And he did – for one whole day.

“There’s been a lot of speculation about the future of our football coach,” Del Conte said in that December 12 statement. “My policy is to wait until the end of the season before evaluating and commenting on our program and coaches. With the close of the regular season, I want to reiterate that Tom Herman is our coach.”

Herman is no longer the coach, though the school still allowed him and his staff to proceed with the early signing period. That 18-player class, ranked No. 17 in the nation per 247Sports, will now have to decide whether it wants to play for whomever Del Conte decides to hire to usher in yet another new era of Texas Football.

In the end, it was Herman’s inability to accomplish what he himself set as the only acceptable standard for this program.

“I think the standard should be what I always have expressed it to be, which is to be in the conversation and to be competing for conference championships in the month of November and December,” Herman said.

After four years without a Big 12 title and two straight underwhelming seasons, it’s time to for Del Conte to conduct his first football coaching search at Texas. No pressure.
