‘Ultimate Playlist’ movie stars sound off on favorite noises, Syracuse restaurants, more - syracuse.com

Syracuse, N.Y. — What sounds would you miss if you went deaf? That’s the question at the root of “The Ultimate Playlist of Noise,” a new Hulu original movie that was filmed in Syracuse.

Produced by Liverpool-based American High, the film follows Marcus (“Euphoria” actor Keean Johnson), an audio-obsessed high school senior who goes on a road trip to record his favorite sounds before he must undergo brain surgery that will render him deaf. A struggling musician named Wendy (“The Handmaid’s Tale” actress Madeline Brewer) helps him on the journey to New York City.

In a joint interview with syracuse.com | The Post-Standard, Johnson and Brewer shared their favorite sounds and experiences from the production, shot primarily in November and December of 2019. During the adventure, they use an old cassette tape recorder (from Marcus’ late brother) to chronicle sounds like a wolf’s howl, a basketball swishing through the net, and a cow mooing at the Blume Again Dairy farm in nearby Jordan.

“They were so sweet,” Johnson said of the cows. “One of the cows had just given birth so there were, like, these two day-old calves that were still trying to figure out how to walk.”

Marcus first sees Wendy when she performs on stage at the Westcott Theater, but she doesn’t see him until he runs into her — literally — with a car as he begins his road trip mixtape. The scene was filmed with a stunt double in the village of Liverpool.

“When I watched it in the trailer... I was like, ‘Oh God! Awful. That looks like it hurt.’ It looks awesome,” Brewer said. “I could watch it over and over again, it’s so amazing.”

Other locations used in the film include The Gem diner, the former A.V. Zogg Middle School (now Syracuse Studios) in Liverpool, Green Lakes State Park, Onondaga Lake Parkway, the former Lakeview Bowling Center, and an alley behind syracuse.com’s downtown office. The outdoor scenes proved a bit challenging

“I think we were being told that it wasn’t going to be that cold,” Johnson recalled. “Like, ‘Oh no, it’s not going to be that bad. We’ll wrap this up and by the time we’re done shooting the snow will start coming in.’ But I don’t think Syracuse had that in mind for us. We definitely got to experience the winter. Good thing that there’s nice locals or it would have been tough.”

They also enjoyed local restaurants while in town. Johnson said he loved the healthy wraps at Original Grain in downtown Syracuse and Brewer gave a shout-out to Oh My Darling.

“I went back (to Oh My Darling) in the summer as well, had some cocktails... I love those people, I love the food they make,” Brewer said with a smile.

Brewer and Johnson returned to Syracuse in June 2020 for reshoots at the Greater Syracuse Soundstage (formerly known as the nano film hub in DeWitt). It was one of the first productions in New York state after the coronavirus pandemic shut down the film and TV industry in both New York City and Hollywood.

“It was intense and you could tell that American High was taking it really seriously,” Brewer said, pointing out that the company pivoted to producing face shields in the first few months of the pandemic while productions were shut down. “So you could tell American High as a company was taking it really seriously, and to keep us and all of the people that work for and with them, safe... We had these stickers, like Zone A and Zone B, it was super weird. It was like entering a whole new world but we got it done and everyone was safe. We got to finish the movie.”

FAVORITE SOUNDS

“The Ultimate Playlist of Noise” features several original songs written for the movie, and performances by Brewer, including on stage at the Westcott Theater.

“I can’t play the guitar,” Brewer admitted. “I don’t know what it is, my fingers just won’t move that fast. I can’t do it. But they got me some guitar lessons, which was really nice, just to help me along... but I do love to sing. I sing all the time. So it was awesome to be able to do it at work.”

But more than music, the movie emphasizes sounds that are hard to appreciate until they’re gone. Johnson said he’s missed hearing a crowd cheering in stadiums since the coronavirus pandemic began.

“That’s a rare sound and it’s so powerful. Who knows when we’ll hear that for real again?” Johnson said.

Brewer’s own bucket list of sounds would include the click that a gas stove makes when it’s turned on, before the flames come up.

“I like the sound of my parents front door,” she added with a laugh. The storm door was “really loud and I usually hate the sound of it but I’d miss it if I couldn’t hear it anymore.”

Johnson thinks the movie can teach viewers the importance of not taking anything in life for granted. As his character prepares for a life without hearing, he filmed scenes where Marcus learned sign language. Early in his career, Johnson did an episode of ABC Family/Freeform’s “Switched at Birth.”

“I had two really good coaches that taught me all the lines I had to do for that episode in sign language. I thought it was a truly fascinating language,” Johnson said. “I remember it was an argument scene. I was trying to keep up with my voice, with my hands and it was tough. Yeah, it is a fascinating language.”

MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE

Johnson, 24, has performed on Broadway and has more than a dozen screen credits, including “Alita: Battle Angel,” HBO’s “Euphoria,” and CMT’s “Nashville.”

Brewer, 28, has appeared on shows like “The Handmaid’s Tale,” “Orange is the New Black,” and “Black Mirror,” plus the movies “Cam,” “Captive State,” and “Hustlers.”

But “The Ultimate Playlist of Noise” stands out thanks to their experiences in Syracuse and a “really really sweet” gift from screenwriter Mitchell Winkie.

“At the very end of the film he gave all of us recorders and it had a tape and it had all of these different songs (we had been listening to) when we were driving to work and stuff,” Johnson said. “It was the best wrap gift I ever got.”

“Yeah it was cool,” Brewer agreed.
