STORRS, Conn. – The UConn women's volleyball team defeated the St. John's Red Storm in four sets on Thursday night at Gampel Pavilion. The Huskies pick up their first Big East victory of the year and improve to 1-1 on the season, while St. John's falls to 3-2 on the year and 0-1 in conference play.

How it Happened

The Huskies jumped out to an early lead in the first set, before the Red Storm battled back to even the score at seven. St. John's would take the lead late in the set, forcing UConn to call timeout, trailing 20-19. With the score knotted up at 22, junior Kennadie Jake-Turner's service ace sparked three straight UConn points to take the first set 25-22.

The second set began just as the first, with back-and-forth exciting rallies. The teams remained tied until St. John's opened a 13-10 lead, forcing UConn to call a timeout. The Red Storm continued to put the pressure on, pushing the lead to 19-11, forcing another UConn timeout. St. John's would even the score with a 25-15 victory in set two.

A back and forth third set saw the Huskies and Red Storm deadlocked at 13 by the midway point of the set. The teams would alternate short scoring runs and were tied at 18 late in the set. UConn took a 22-20 lead late in the set, forcing a St. John's timeout. The Huskies fought off a Red Storm surge and took the set 25-22, taking a 2-1 lead in the match.

UConn got off to another quick start in the fourth set, forcing St. John's to take an early timeout trailing 4-1. The Huskies continued their scoring run, pushing their lead to 11-5, forcing another Red Storm timeout. Strong efforts on both sides of the ball saw UConn take control and win the set 25-17 and the match 3-1.
