Huskies Fall to St. John's in Four Sets - University of Connecticut Athletics - UConn Huskies

STORRS, Conn. – The UConn women's volleyball team fell to St. John's in four sets on Friday night at Gampel Pavilion. The Huskies fall to 1-2 on the season and 1-1 in Big East play while the Red Storm improve to 4-2 on the year and 1-1 in conference action.

How it Happened

UConn came out strong in the opening set, taking a 12-8 lead and forcing St. John's to call timeout. Following the break, the Red Storm tied the set and went on a 5-0 run to take the lead. They would win the first set 25-21.

The Red Storm continued to pressure the Huskies, going on another 5-0 run early in the second set. Following a timeout, the Huskies went on a run to bring the score to 6-6. The teams continued to share points through the midway point of the set, with St. John's holding a slim 13-12 lead. UConn clawed back into the set, tying the score at 16, forcing another Red Storm timeout. The Huskies continued to fight back trailing 24-21, going on a 6-1 run to win a thrilling second set 27-25.

The third set began with more exciting rallies that saw the teams continue to share the points. St. John's held a slight 13-11 advantage at midway through the set, forcing a UConn timeout. The Red Storm would take the set 25-19 and a 2-1 match lead.

Another back-and-forth set saw the teams in tightly contested battle, with UConn ahead 12-10 midway through the set. St. John's took an 18-17 lead late in the set, forcing the Huskies to take a timeout. UConn rallied late to tie the game at 23, but the Red Storm would hold on and take the set 25-23 and the match 3-1.

The Huskies had another balanced offensive night with five players recording at more than five kills each. Junior Caylee Parker led the way with 15 kills while adding seven digs and three blocks. Fellow junior Kennadie Jake-Turner added 10 kills and hit at a team-high .600. She also tallied four digs and three blocks. Freshman Taylor Pannell had a solid night, recording seven kills and a team-high eight blocks. Redshirt-junior Courtney Morris led the Huskies with 31 assists on the night as well on the defensive end with a team-best nine digs. Sophomore Allie Garland contributed on both sides of the floor as well, tallying six kills, six blocks, and four digs.

UConn is back in action with another Big East two game series on Friday, March 5th and Saturday, March 6th at Villanova. Start times for both games are TBA.
