DALLAS, Texas – Just as Kansas State had hoped following the first day of the Trinity Forest Invitational, the Wildcats took advantage of their opportunity on Tuesday to improve four spots and finish in fourth place during the final round at Trinity Forest Golf Club.
"We fought really hard this week to finish fourth," senior Niamh McSherry said. "I think that's an awesome finish for us playing against other Big 12 teams. It is definitely a confidence boost going into the rest of the season."
K-State finished with a 54-hole total of 39-over par 903, which included a final-round score of 289, the second best in the field on Tuesday.
Freshman Napua Glossner also made a move up the leaderboard, 35 places to be exact. Glossner fired a 5-under par 67 during the final round, the second best of the tournament overall and tops in the third round. Her impressive third-round score puts her in a tie for the eighth lowest round score in school history and lowest by a Wildcat in nearly two years. The San Diego, California, product finished in a tie for 30th at 13-over par 229 (79-83-67).
"She stayed in the fairway, hit greens, and holed putts," head coach Kristi Knight said about Glossner's impressive round. "She was sharp all around today and led the team."
McSherry led the way for K-State as she tied for 15th at 8-over par 224 (76-75-73). Fellow European native, Briony Bayles, finished in a tie for 23rd at 11-over par 227 (77-73-77), a score that included a hole-in-one during the second round on Monday.
"This is such a different golf course than we ever play," McSherry said after playing Trinity Forest for the fourth time in her collegiate career. "This is my second time playing as a five-some, and I think it shows the importance for us to keep up the good energy. It helped us to see how well Napua was playing, which gave us a bit of a boost."
Haley Vargas tied for 28th at 12-over par 228 (78-78-72), which included an even-par round on Tuesday. Reid Isaac, a senior from Montgomery, Texas, tied for 49th after carding a 19-over par 235 (80-78-77).
As a team, the Wildcats holed 15 birdies in the final round of the tournament, six of which came from Glossner. In the same round, K-State shaved off 19 strokes from its previous low to finish with a 289, the third-best third round score of the field.
"Hopefully the ladies will take away what they are capable of doing," Knight said. "We had a great finish and I am proud of them. However, I think we gave away too many shots on the greens at times, but we will move forward from that."
Baylor and Oklahoma State took the top spots with scores of 1-over par 865 and 15-over par 879, respectively. Texas finished third at 27-over par and Texas Tech was fifth at 40-over par as Big 12 teams claimed the top five spots in the event.
The fourth-place finish in Dallas is the first of five regular season spring events for the Wildcats. In three weeks, they will travel down to Tallahassee, Florida to play in the FSU Match-Up. The event, held February 26-28, will be played at the Seminole Legacy Club.
