Light snow dusted scattered areas across the Puget Sound on Monday and forecasters say areas in the lowlands could see more snow this week as a band of cold air moves into the region.
The National Weather Service’s Seattle office says there’s a threat for more lowland snow Tuesday night and into Wednesday near the Strait of Juan de Fuca. That’s backed up by University of Washington professor of atmospheric sciences Cliff Mass, who says that early forecasts, while still possessing an element of uncertainty, currently point toward “major lowland snow” by Thursday and Friday.
“The latest European Center forecast has around 15 inches of total snowfall over central Puget Sound by Friday afternoon!” Mass said in a blog post published Sunday. “How much would pile up? Perhaps half of that.”
The U.S. model “is less aggressive with snow,” Mass says, “but has several inches over the area.” This will be driven by cold temperatures dipping into the 20s and 30s by the middle of the week. What’s uncertain at this point is whether precipitation will arrive alongside that cold snap.
Providing a more specific look at the odds of a major snow event, Seattle-based atmospheric scientist Joe Boomgard-Zagrodnik laid the situation out as follows: According to current models, there is an 80% Seattle will see a combined 3 or more inches of snow by Sunday, a 60% chance the region sees over over 6 inches, and between a 10 and 20% chance we get a 12-plus inch “epic snowpocalypse.”
