HOUSTON, Texas: The University of Central Arkansas played it close with Houston Baptist but eventually fell to end their four-match winning streak.
The Sugar Bears never fell behind big as they battled to the very end in this heated matchup but could not muster up enough as they lost 3-1. Leading the charge in this back and forth exchange was sophomore outside hitter Alexis Stumbough. Stumbough posted 20 kills in only four sets for the Sugar Bears and added 16 digs to her stat line. Another big-time player in this match was freshman Charlie Tidwell. Tidwell ranked second in kills with 13 while hitting .387 and provided support in the middle with five assisted blocks.
Set 1:
The first set was the most successful one for the Huskies and set the tone for the remainder of the match. HBU found their spots in every corner as they posted a .325 hitting percentage. It was not like that from the gig-go as UCA grabbed the first two points, but after that, they never led again in the set. The Sugar Bears made a quick run towards the end of the set as they knotted it up at 20, but from that point, HBU scored three straight to eventually win it 25-22.
Set 2:
The second set couldn't have been any closer from the start as both teams came out with a desire to win the set. It was a constant back and forth as both teams tried to reach the set's ten-point mark first. The Sugar Bears reached this feat first and added one more to gain their largest lead in the first two sets with three. The Huskies quickly countered with a four-point rally, and from that point, HBU ran the table to win it 25-21.
Set 3:
The Sugar Bears opened the third, doing the opposite of the first two sets as they fell behind 6-3. As the match went on, UCA did not make up the difference until a four-point rally gave them their first lead at 15-13. However, it was a last-second run of seven straight points that made a world of difference. In that run, errors plagued the Huskies as they produced five errors in that span. Mistakes played a crucial factor in this set in general, as HBU had seven kills and seven errors to give them a .000 hitting percentage. The Sugar Bears made them pay for that as UCA posted a .205 hitting percentage with eight more kills than errors. That all came back to bite the Huskies as the Sugar Bears claimed the set 25-20.
Set 4:
The fourth set was another close contest as neither team could get more than two ahead of one another to start. HBU started to gradually pull away when they were up 12-11, as they added to their score four more times to give them a five point lead. While UCA continued to fight back there was nothing that they could do as the Huskies finished it off after the Sugar Bears came within two. When it was all said and done HBU won the set 25-21 and the match 3-1.
Up next the Sugar Bears stay on the road as they face off with Stephen F. Austin next Thursday at 6 p.m. in Nacogdoches, Texas.
Quote from coach John Newberry:
"We had a lot on the line today. We fell a little short in crucial moments. HBU had a solid game plan and executed well. Lexi Stumbough had a great offensive match today. She's been a consistent weapon throughout the last few weeks. 20 kills in a 4 set match is incredible."
