Do you know what a Himalayan singing bowl is? A sound therapist explains - MLive.com

ANN ARBOR, MI -- There’s a business in Ann Arbor that can help you relax with the aid of singing bowls.

So what is a singing bowl?

Rob Meyer-Kukan explains in the video above.

Rob Meyer-Kukan and his partner, Scott Meyer-Kukan, opened their sound therapy business, 7 Notes Natural Health, on Ann Arbor’s east side in 2015. They use Himalayan singing bowls -- hand-hammered bronze instruments whose musical reverberation to soothe the soul.

The bowls - essentially a form of a bell - are created through a traditional process of forging, cooling and hand-hammering, starting life as a hockey-puck-sized disk before being slowly spread into their concave shape and polished into a sheen. They’re then imported to the U.S. from the Himalayan regions of India or Nepal.

During a session, bowls are placed at different points on or around a person as they lay on a massage bed, Meyer-Kukan says. He then strikes the inner edge of each of the brass bowls with a rounded mallet, or uses a felt tool along the rim of the bowl to produce a different tone.

Certain sessions may employ other instruments, including point-massage tuning forks and even movable chimes and gongs. Customers can also choose from an assortment of essential oils to be diffused through the room during their session.

Before the pandemic, the business hosted large groups for a meditative session featuring larger moving instruments, like their 36-inch gong “Bernice.” Now, customers can arrange for a smaller group and cluster together in household pods while maintaining social distance.

Each instrument offers a wealth of tones and vibrations, which Meyer-Kukan says can reverberate through the body and trigger a relaxing mental response not unlike the audiotherapy used in treating coma patients. As a musician, he’s fascinated with the wealth of possibilities available from a single instrument.

“The saying goes you can spend a lifetime getting to know a gong,” he said.
